Virb Elite Color Qualaity

I've spent much of the day reading and watching video of comparisons of the new GoPro Hero 3+ and the Virb Elite. Obviously, there are many differences, but one thing that popped out at me while watching some side-by-side video comparisons was the GoPro color quality seems to be consistently better....more natural. My interests are not so much in video as taking reasonable quality photos on the fly....and the color aspect is important. Has anyone seen any changes in color quality with the new soft/firm-ware upgrades?
  • I would say the garmin virb elite "over exposes" compared to the go pro. I find this easy enough to correct in video processing, and most of my riding is in lower light conditions, so it is better for me.

Again--exposure, easy to correct in i-movie.

To me, there is one simple reason to get the virb elite vs. other cameras--GPS and sensor data---if you do not need it, then there are less expensive and just as good/better options.

Examples of GPS data being useful---went Zip lining in Kauai--was a lot of fun to have the speed in the video--hit 34mph on the bigger line. Granted, I did that with a contour +, but with contour embedding the gps data required a third party software first (dashware) then editing in another software--and of course, for now, contour is defunct.
  • Do you all find the Virb photo quality equally unsatisfactory?

Something that's more important to me is image sharpness, both in video and photos and to me there's no comparison. The VIRB wins every time.

Also, since the GoPro is in an enclosure, I often had fog on the lens screwing up my pictures. That never happens with the VIRB since it's not enclosed. I left my VIRB outside for an hour this morning at -20C temperature, recording birds at a feeder, and it worked perfectly. All the images were crystal clear.

This is a huge advantage, imho.
  • As long as you have light I would say the Virb is very good for still images. Colour seems to be correct as well.
  • Not to be picky--but really not fair of you--I do not believe we all stated anything was unsatisfactory. I find the image quality from the virb to be excellent, better than my former countour, and on par with my VIO-POV HD in an easier to use package, plus sensor data.
  • As far as I can tell, nobody's said it was "Unsatisfactory". Including you. :)
  • Hubilado's post was:

The statement/question is the virb photo quality is not satisfactory--and the question is to what extent we find it so--although I could be reading too much into it--if so, my apologies.
  • I saw that. But nobody's complained, that I can tell.
