GPS Synchronisation

Another synchronisation question.

I can't get any clips to synchronise with the GPS data.
I load all the video clips into Virb Edit. Then a attach the GPS file I've recorded on my Edge 800. The two don't sync up so I'm trying to use the Adjust screen to match the 2 up but can't.
I locate a frame in the video screen on the left. I'm using turns etc to make things easier.
Then on the right hand screen I try to move the red circle to the position on the map I know it should be.
If I click the red circle to try and drag it, it disappears from the map and seems to reset back to the beginning ( although you can't see it ). So I move the slider back to the left ( start of vide clip ) and the sliders appears fairly close to where it should be. If I use the 2 small locator buttons they don't seem to have the granularity to position the red circle where it should go.

From all my efforts so far I don't have any video clips with valid data overlays which was my number one reason for buying the Virb.

Did you ensure that the time on the Virb was showing the exact same time as the Edge 800, prior to making a video with GPS synchronization?

Which version of VIRB Edit? 2.2.2 seems to have solved this problem for me.

    Doh

Of course I was forgetting that the Virb ( non Elite ) uses it's internal clock so the time needs to be manually synchronised. I presume the Elite will use the GPS time.

I am using Virb edit 2.2.2.

It will, but you may see slight variance. For me, using two Virb Elite's and an Edge 800, I saw about 11-seconds of variance there that I had to adjust for.

You are exactly right. Since the non-Elite VIRB doesn't have a GPS, it uses whatever time you gave it for the video. If you set the time on to the same as your computer, the synchronization should work better.

The VIRB Elite uses GPS time, so tracks synchronize much easier.

Do you have the Edge set to do "Smart" recording? Glancing at my track from today, I see plenty of 6 or 7 second gaps between track points, and even a few 8's.

    Smart Recording

I wasn't aware of the smart recording setting.
Just checked the manual and my Edge 800 and I've changed it to every second.

Incidentally, could this what gives some jumpy data on Strava. My iPhone data always looks better on Strava than the Edge data does.

    Thanks for all the help.

No, 1-s (plus, with a power meter it forces it).

I was actually referring through simply to the initial offset between the two devices and noting that even with GPS time being provided, there may still be a slight variation.
