First ride with my new VIRB Elite

My VIRB Elite arrived yesterday from Amazon, so I mounted it on my MTB and took it with me today to record the ride. I encountered a few problems along the way. At about 15 minutes in, I dropped off the pavement onto a gravel road, a drop of about 3 inches on my full suspension Cannondale Rush. The VIRB didn't seem to like the impact, and restarted. (As I found out later, it lost the first 15 minutes of video.) I started the first climb, then eventually reached the top and started descending. The road vibration from the gravel road naturally picked up as my speed increased. A little ways into the descent I noticed that the viewfinder was frozen and the record light wasn't blinking. I stopped and held down the power button until the VIRB restarted. (Later I found that the VIRB had lost the GPS data for this segment, although the video was still there.) From here until the end of the ride, the VIRB behaved itself. I stopped a couple of times at overlooks to remove the VIRB from the mount (easy with gloves on) and shoot some stills while the video was still running (pretty cool). The stills came out fine, although with the overcast skies and the leaves all down, there wasn't much point to actually taking them.

So when I got home, I started VIRB Edit on my Mac Pro and connected the VIRB. That's when I found out about the missing first 15 minutes of video, and the missing GPS data for the next 24 minutes (the VIRB stores videos into 24 minute, 4 Gb chunks, so for my 1:42 ride with 15 minutes lost, I had 4 clips). After VIRB Edit retrieved the clips from the VIRB, it offered to let me add GPS data to the first clip. I used the .fit from my Edge 800 to do that, but that exposed another problem. The synchronization done in VIRB Edit is about 15 minutes off, so it was showing the heart rate, altitude, and speed (and the position on the map) for about 15 minutes before the actual video. (The VIRB itself doesn't seem to know about daylight time; at the moment it's showing 2:14 when the actual time is 1:14 EST). Of course, that's only a problem for that one 24 minute clip where the VIRB froze and lost the GPS data for that segment. The remaining clips use the VIRB's own GPS data, and so is accurate. On the other hand, the VIRB doesn't seem to have actually connected to my HRM (Garmin hard HRM belt) and maybe not my Tempe, even though I asked it to. The HRM was working (the Edge 800 saw it the whole time). Don't know about the Tempe, since the 800 can't show it and I left my Fenix at home. The video is displaying G, speed, and altitude, but not HR or temperature.

So. Minuses: the VIRB glitched twice and lost data, both video and GPS. Not good. VIRB Edit didn't synchronize the video and GPS data from my Edge 800 properly. Pluses: the mount was easy to use with gloved hands. Video quality is good, although stabilization doesn't seem to work very well on high speed (25 - 30 mph) descents on gravel roads. The ability to take stills while recording video is a big plus, although the stills are small (in 16x9 12 M pixel mode) compared to my Pentax Optio, which I usually carry.
  • Anybody sure if it needs to be metric or statute on my device?
How can I change from mph to kmph in the videos? Do need to make changes in my device or mac? I thought on my device but i can't find how.
    Thx in advance

It's Setup->System->Units on the VIRB (statute or metric). Don't know if you can change it in the video after the fact, but there's a selector in Preferences (US or metric).
  • Fourth ride with the VIRB Elite. Out with the SanDisk, in with the Sony. Video set to 1040p at 30 fps. The status page on the Elite shows the HRM and the Tempe detected, so off I go on a two hour MTB ride. First clip boundary, 23:56, no problems. Second clip boundary 47:52, no problems. Third clip boundary 1:12:48, no problems. I'm beginning to get hopeful. Finally the fourth clip transition at 1:35:44 screws up, and the viewfinder freezes, although the record light is still flashing. I eventually notice (I'm not wearing the sunglasses with stick on bifocals, so I can't see the fine details on the VIRB screen), and stop. This time, instead of mashing down the power button, I slide the red slider to "off" to try to evoke the "saving GPS data" behavior and not lose the track on the VIRB. Although that caused the viewfinder to become responsive again, the VIRB was still screwed up. I had limited control with the buttons, so finally I mashed the power button and restarted the thing. (Damn it, Garmin, defensive programming! You should be periodically writing out the .fit and the .gpx file so that data isn't lost. You're recording video, so the disk space for .fit/.gpx is in the noise, and surely you can spend some processor cycles to write out the GPS/ANT+ data. Writing it out only at the end is a bad mistake.) So my GPS track from the VIRB covered only the last 20 minutes, but at least that track contains HR data this time, although the temperature data in the .fit is all "INVALID" even though the Elite told me it was reading the Tempe.

So on to VIRB Edit for Mac 2.2. There are six clips on the Elite, the first four 23:56, VIRB0005.MP4 zero size from when it froze (and I'll bet I find some "orphaned clusters" when I run Disk Utility on the VIRB soon), and the final one 19:20 from the restart to the end. In all I lost about 5 minutes of video. So I had to add GPS data to the first four from the .fit on my Edge 800. I did it, although it wasn't easy to align them by hand properly because the red dot on the map kept winding up in the wrong place or disappearing entirely at times. I like the new overlays, but I'd like a bit more flexibility. I'd like to show speed, altitude, HR, and the track, but the closest I can get to that in the "Cycling" templates also has pace (useless) and cadence. Because of weird tube shapes and geometry, I can't get a GSC-10 on my mountain bike.

So I think at this point it's time to stop and wait for some Elite software updates.

Oh, I should mention the battery life. The Elite was on for a total of about 2:15. It gave me a low battery warning about 15 minutes out, but it lasted to the end. Temps were in the high 30's-mid 40's F during the ride.

Could not agree more - I was so excited with the purchase, but it has been hard work fighting all the glitches and did I want to like it so much!!!

I use action cameras for mountain biking and windsurfing, and would rather be focused on the sport than checking to see if the camera is still working - could be dangerous!!

Going to keep using GoPro (with extra battery pack) for now ... does not crash/hang which is the main thing!

I will be patient for a week or two and see what the Garmin Gods bring us in the way of fixes, but if nothing comes out soon I can see that little white thing being returned and bank the cash until GoPro 4 arrives.
  • btw the search function of this forum never returns anything except a form urging me to specify more details in my search, which then still don't return anything. It seems like garmin is actually incapable of having any software done properly.

Really? What are you entering? I've just tried a couple and entering virb for example brings up a list of threads. Entering basecamp and oregon brought up a list of threads discussing basecamp and oregon. No problem with search that I can find
  • Not able to check any logs, I'm not responsible for the website or a Garmin employee :)

Maybe there were just some gremlins a while ago, anyway glad it's now working for you.

I made my first ride on MTB with my Edge 810 and Virb Elite.

Beforehand i wanted to connect the Virb to my Ant+ sensors. HRM dit work, Cadence (GSC10) didn't.
I read that i'm not the only one with that problem. I tried some things, like keeping all other sensors more than 10 meters away from the Virb.
But it didn't seem to help. Someone knows what to do?

During the ride i made several videos @720p. I did vary between my edge and the switch on the virb to start the recording.
Everyting worked fine. The longest video is about 10 minutes. The next time i will record for longer period of time.
Hoping it will not crash ;)

I did import te videos in Virb Edit, but haven't gotten around to creating videos with overlay yet.
Is was struggling with my windows 8.1 machine, Virb Edit is not importing my videos.
So i had to boot up an old windows 7 machine which is to slow to work with such big files.

    See also topic: https://forums.garmin.com/showthread.php?63941-VIRB-Edit-with-Windows-8-1
Maybe some of the followers of this topic knows an answer to this problem ;)

    VIRB not so Elite

I'm having same problems, won't shut off, won't start, large gaps in recording, the list goes on.
  • This is my first ride with the VIRB Elite:

    http://vimeo.com/79772235

I experimented a little for a couple of days before recording this, and had issues where the camera locked, but I have not had one lockup since I restored it to factory settings by holding the down arrow when powering up the VIRB.

These are the instructions for performing a Master Reset:

    To perform a master reset:

Ensure the device is powered off
    Press and hold Down
    Press and immediately release Power
Wait for the message "Erase all user data?"
    Release Down
    Select Yes
The device should now be reset to default factory settings, all user data should be removed, and the device should function as expected.
  • Went for another short ride today and the camera worked perfectly again.

  • Success...sort of

Try number five, this time with the new software 2.70 installed. Camera set at 1080p at 30 fps, UltraZoom, image stabilization on. I turned the microphone off this time, since I don't find the sound conducted through the frame and the mount all that interesting. I had some time between rain showers, so I mounted the VIRB on my touring bike and set off. The good: no data loss. I have the complete video record and the complete GPS track. The track shows a new minor problem for Garmin to solve, since the summaries provided by the VIRB are obviously wrong. The bad: no ANT+ data whatsoever. When I turned the VIRB on, it indicated that it had locked up with my HRM, but when I turned on speed/cadence, it didn't lock. So I told it to "Forget All Sensors", and it did. For the rest of the day. A couple of resets, both hardware and via menu, didn't help. It didn't see either my GSC-10 or my HR belt. (The Tempe stayed at home.)

The clips are now 24:05 in length, so a little different. I haven't really looked at the video yet.

So this is progress, at least. If it can record video reliably a time or two more, I'll feel more confident when I'm out cross country skiing and have the VIRB head mounted and out of sight that it's actually working. The ANT+ problem still needs to be solved, but I'll always have either my Edge 800 or my Fenix along, so I won't actually lose any of the ANT+ data. So at the moment it's a VIRB semi-Elite, but that's better than it was.

One more thing. As I look a the video, the altitude the VIRB shows as it starts off is 1122 ft, and I live at 1218 ft. We don't need yet another device with a barometric altimeter that can't be calibrated, Garmin. Give us a way to calibrate it. Waypoint calibration like the Edge's would be fine.
