VIRB Edit Javascript Error

I get the following error in the right side of panel when attempting to manually do a g-Metrix sync, and again if I try to use the Map tab.

"This page didn't load Google Maps correctly. See the JavaScript console for technical details."

Additionally, my actual video is ~5 minutes long, but the right panel is showing 40 minutes. This is the first run on a freshly formatted memory card. This is with the latest version of the software as of this post, v5.4.2.

Any insight would be great. I got this camera (Virb Ultra 30) specifically for the G-Metrix and every video I make has them badly and unusably out of sync.
  • This is an issue on the windows side as well. You can refer to that thread. Regardless, someone should open a ticket on the Mac side. Possibly different developers watching that thread.

The issue is due to a change Google Maps has made. There is an API key that is now not working given the new restrictions Google has placed on using it's maps. It's probably a simple fix, but someone has to know the problem exists first. So. Open a ticket. I don't use the Mac software, otherwise I would.
  • I chatted with a support representative and Garmin have no timetable for a fix.
  • once they change the API key, Google could in principle start charging Garmin for the use of its maps. Maybe that is not an option for Garmin - so it may not just be a technical hold-up... Considering that this is a pretty fundamental feature for Garmin action cams I hope they are coming up with a quick solution.
  • The cost of the API is laughably inexpensive: https://cloud.google.com/maps-platform/pricing/sheet/ To put it in perspective, I use the sync API a few times per week. In the 5 years that I'll own the camera, that'll come to around 1000 uses of the API. (I'm estimating on the extremely high side, here.) Even if each use of the sync feature requires multiple API calls - and it probably does - the total cost of my use of the API will come to a fraction of a cent. Weighed against the revenue of the hardware sale, the API cost is insignificant.

What's holding up the change is that they were caught off-guard by the deprecation.
  • I'm another person having this issue. Also having fundamental software/firmware issues with my Garmin Vivosport smartwatch that are just not being resolved after many months. I'm beginning to realize that software is 1) not a competency for Garmin, and 2) not something they have enough resources to support properly.
  • I'm another victim of this error. I've tried a few fixed, but nothing worked. I recommend just sitting tight until Garmin fixes it on their end.
  • same here on IMac running High Sierra 10.13.6 and Virb Edit 5.4.2....
  • I recommend just sitting tight until Garmin fixes it on their end.

Based on the lack of progress on other issues, I'm skeptical that this will happen in a reasonable period of time - they've know this was coming for 2 years.

On the other hand, I noticed that even though the map doesn't display, I am able to set the start/finish line looking at the video. So, at least for me with in-car camera footage, I am still able to use it to show lap times - which was why I chose Garmin over GoPro in the first place.

  • Unfortunately, even if you work around the map issue and manage to sync, you'll only sync one of the datastreams. I find that I can either sync GPS/speed/location, OR altitude, OR heart rate, OR accelerometer data. Whichever one I sync is close, but the rest are off by anywhere from 3-10 seconds.
  • I do not understand, Google Maps s still available in Garmin Connect.
