Virb Edit 4.2.3 (the last stable version) unusable on macOS High Sierra

First off, please don't recommend that I update to version 5.2.1. I've already tried that, and that version is not stable when it comes to multi-camera editing. Even the most basic editing comes out with audio popping, video skipping and just generally a terrible experience.

Can anyone else confirm that they have the same issue with Virb Edit 4.2.3 and macOS High Sierra? I am able to launch to application, but when I attempt to import new clips, or edit a project, the contents of the window slide to the right (as they normally do) but they continue to slide completely off the screen and out of view. With the import clips window, I can keep resizing the window to the right (increasing the width) and moving the entire window off the left of the screen until the import controls are visible, but it takes a while as they've moved pretty far out of frame. When it comes to editing a project, no amount of window resizing can pull the Preview window back into frame. I've included a few photos to show what it looks like.

I may have come to a point where Garmin is no longer a viable option which is really disappointing because I love the data overlay features. Anyone have any suggestions on getting 4.2.3 to work again? ciq.forums.garmin.com/.../1277002.jpg ciq.forums.garmin.com/.../1277003.jpg ciq.forums.garmin.com/.../1277004.jpg
  • Had the same problem with 4.2.3 which forced me to 5.x.x and the issues you mention with that version. One can get to the controls on 4.2.3 by continuing to stretch the width of the window (until it is much wider than the physical screen) and moving the whole window using the top bar grab. You may have to repeat the duo of actions several times to eventually get to the action buttons for that window. Very painful but it can be made to work.

Audio issues continue with 5.x.x. and I have just reported an issue with producing a picture only video that results in complete unviewable rubbish unless you include at least one video clip. I am beginning to wonder if Garmin truly cares about customers for the following reasons
    - software for Virb has been unstable for many months now
    - comments in the forum - garmin's own forum - get ignored and not replied to by anyone from Garmin (potentially forever)
    - video creation times seem to extend with each new update to the software and are now horrendous. The hardware requirement is high but the software seems to only use a single core and take forever
    - the latest Virb Camera (Ultra HD) seems like a step back from the robust design of the X/XE and Garmin seems focused on a gimmicky 360 degree camera at the expense of the prior capabilities
    - a minor one but, within this forum there are two areas for Virb Edit Software (Action cameras/virb edit(Mac) and Mac software/Virb Edit which don't even lead to the same message set and have no clear distinction. As noted a minor one but another example go lack of attention.

So now we are stuck in no man's land between a working but painfully unusable 4.2.3 and a buggy 5.x.x. The one hope is that an update may be coming soon as the windows version just moved to 5.3. That said, several have commented that that release is also buggy
  • Thanks for the reply.

I did figure out that you can resize and move the window to see some controls, but in the Edit Video window, I no amount of resizing/moving will bring the Preview window into view (the window where you can actually see what's going on in the clip). Were you able to get what's usually in the upper right quadrant of the window in view? When I resize everything, it just seems to keep stretching the upper left quadrant controls.
  • I don't have 4.2.3 installed at present. I think I could get a preview window but only by going very wide (multiple physical screens wide and keep moving the window). I'l see if I can find another machine to reinstall 4.2.3 to verify
