4.2.1. Mac issues - link to older versions?

I recently picked up a Virb Ultra (I'm a long time Virb Elite user so I know my way around Edit) and used it this weekend for my daughter's softball games. It has the latest firmware and I downloaded the latest Mac Virb Edit software. I'm experiencing several issues:
1) i record each swing, which means i'm pressing start/stop for each pitch. For 5 games, i think it said i had around ~560 clips. When i go to import them, I chose "new clips" and it made it until about 460 then it stopped, but the message was that it was compete - even though the bar wasn't all the way to the right. Checking Finder reveals only 460 were saved to disk. I tried the full import at least 3 times and it never completes. That's problem #1.
2) so I tried looking at the timestamps in the camera and decided to import files per game. This seemed to work and I was able to get all the games imported. However, when I went to create a game video, I'd drag all the clips for game1 into the editor, but there was no gMetrix data. I tried just adding one clip to a new video but, again, no gMetrix data. Did something go wrong with the import?
3) my latest issue, when I drag the X dozen clips into the editor, they all get there, but then the program locks up. Maybe it's taking a long time to process everything? I've waited up to 10 min with no response to I have to force close the program.

I've tried restarting the app, restarting my Mac then restarting the app, but nothing helps.

I'm looking for any input from the Garmin staff or if anyone knows where I can download an earlier version to see if that works.

Thanks,
Steve.
  • Hi Steve,

Sorry about the problems you are experiencing. Earlier versions of VIRB edit don't properly support VIRB Ultra, however.

We'll look into what's going on with mass imports and video creation like you were attempting with issue #1 & #2.

How did you import the videos individually? Did you select them using the 'Import Selection' button, or did you go to 'Other Source' and then select them individually by dragging from Finder or Browsing? We only import the associated fit files when you import from the Camera using 'Import New' or 'Import Selection' buttons.
  • I always use Import New or Import Selection. In this case, I tried both options a few times each. After further testing, what I ended up doing is only import each game, then create the video. Game 1 was about 48 clips, so I'd drag those into the editor, then when I click on the gMetrix tab, it'll literally take up to 10 minutes to show the gMetrix options. I have a high-end 15" MacBook Pro - which is normally really quick, so I'm not sure what the program is doing. When I view the clip in the editor, i see all the data, but when I go to export it, the data is either not there at all or it's only half there - i'd see it for the first X minutes then it's gone.

Hope this helps and thanks for debugging with me.
  • Thanks Steve. I'm opening a couple cases for our team to investigate.

Couple more questions if you have the time:

Do you have the same delay with G-Metrix tab every time you switch to it? Only the first time after opening a video to edit? Or only after creating a new video and then switching to the tab?
Do you have the same issue with G-Metrix data disappearing on export when exporting a video with fewer clips? Can you isolate which clips don't have G-Metrix data on export or does it seem to randomly change which clips don't have G-Metrix data?
Can you verify you don't have 'Hide Overlays for this Clip' selected for the clips w/o GMetrix data? You can find that option in under the Data tab for G-Metrix.
  • 1) the only time i've noticed the delay for the gMetrix tab is when I have a lot (~40+) of clips in there. I also use the camera for bike rides which are typically 1 or 2 clips. No issues here.
    2) since my other videos are only 1-2 clips, i haven't noticed any missing data. One thing that does happen is i tried exporting the same set of clips multiple times and each time the data was inconsistent - e.g. no data at all, some data cut off at X minutes, some data cut off at Y minutes, etc. This happens for the same "project" with no changes made during the export.
    3) the Hide checkbox is unchecked.

    Thanks.
  • Thanks Steve.

One of our engineers who is trying to recreate this issue would like to know
    1. what OS X version you are running?
    2. are you using the App Store release or web release (downloaded from Garmin.com)?
    3. did you upgrade from a previous VIRB Edit release (which version) or is this a new install of VE?

    Thanks!
  • 1) Latest OS X 10.11.6
    2) VE was downloaded directly from the web. I believe I received the message from VE that a new version was available.
    3) yes, upgraded from an earlier version (which ever was the latest). I use my Virb/VE weekly so usually update when i get those "new version available" messages.
  • I agree - The software can literally not be used right now

The software is currently absolutely not usable which causes extreme frustration.
It is all about gauges when having many clips in one video. It gets extremely slow and with extremely I mean that I see the software frozen for way more than 10 minutes which is ridiculous.

I meanwhile do most of it with the iPhone which is also ridiculous. The only issue with the iOS software is that you only have the preset gauges.

I am willing to try any BETA software. If there is NONE I kindly ask URGENTLY for an older software version to be made downloadable.

Are you still seeing the software freeze for more than 10 minutes in 4.2.3? It's not freezing for me when I drag in 41 clips, loads for about 45 seconds then I'm good to go.
