Homeport Depth Data

I have recently purchased a Echomap50S to extend my fishing results and to map the lakes i fish. Previously I had access to a Lowrance HDS7 and with the exported sonar recordings i made mighty fine looking depth maps with a tool called Surfer from Golden Software from raw exported x,y,z coordinates.

Along with the Echomap there was delivered 2 pieces of software; Homeport and BaseCamp.

I have made a few trips with the Echomap50S recording 4Gigs of sonar data. Now i want to get my hands on the sonar recordings.

In Homeport i can replay my sonar recordings and i can export the recordings, but the data does not contain depth.

Here is a segment of the first 10 datapoints
ID,trksegID,lat,lon,ele,time,magvar,geoidheight,name,cmt,desc,src,sym,type,fix,sat,hdop,vdop,pdop,ageofdgpsdata,dgpsid,Temperature,Depth,wtemp,hr,cad,

In the playback i can see the depth just fine.

Any tips on how i can get my hands on the depth data ?

In december 2011 there was a feature request regarding depth in the thread
https://forums.garmin.com/showthread.php?22868-How-would-you-have-us-improve-HomePort&highlight=homeport+depth
about depth data in the export function - but this was apparently not implemented even 3 years later.

I can't help you with HomePort (not sure if you have the PC or Mac version since you posted in both forums) but it may be possible to open the HomePort database in BaseCamp and see if it will export the data.

In the Windows version of BaseCamp press Ctrl-O (Edit menu, Options), go to General, and use the "+" in "Database Options" to open the HomePort database.

Hi Stuart, i run the windows version :) - sorry for mixing up the posts.

I can easily open the sonar files in Basecamp and export the data.

The export only contains lattitude and longtitude regardless of the export format.

Not sure how you got the data into HomePort in the first place but is it possible your Echomap50S still has the information on it (e.g. a card etc)?

I manually copy GPX files from my devices, and save them, rather that importing them into BaseCamp etc and deleting the original device data. That way I always have the original source.

I think HomePort/BaseCamp keep tracks/trip logs in files in the database "TrackSegments" folder. However I don't know the format of those files. Perhaps a Google search will shed some light.

The echomap50s writes 1GB sonarlog files to a SD-card along with an xml-file with serial numer and other data.
When you insert the card into to pc Homeport automatically displays the files.
The files have the extension RSD and the format of the file is not readable for editors and other software except Garmins own.

However, this afternoon i was looking into the NMEA settings and i saw that the commands SDDBT (depth below transducer) and SSDPT(depth of water) were turned off.

I will test this setting on tomorrows fishing trip :D

I've never seen a RSD file so I have no idea.

That could be the issue. No data = no recording of data :)

The NMEA settings were factory defaults and no living souls except geeks and someone like me would ever adjust these settings.

Well, lets see if the settings do the job.

I need depth-data to complete my maps.
These were made from almost 1 million soundings with the Lowrance HDS7.

My 76CSx and Oregon 450 NMEA settings are customized but then I'm a geek too :D

After changing NMEA settings nothing changed, the export files from BaseCamp and HomePort still contains no depth data.

What i find really weird is that when i export to .kml and open the file in Google Earth i can make an elevation profile.

Funny since the .kml file contains no elevation data.

I have sent a request to Garmin Support to get an explanation about the lack of detph data.

Let's see what their reply is.

    Thank you for your replies.

I sent a question regarding the depth issue in HomePort and BaseCamp to Garmin Support and their reply was that export of any other data than longtitude and lattitude from Homeport and BaseCamp was not supported.

I was welcome to raise a customer request for this function to the Garmin Developers.

Well, it looks that Garmin are not ready for this kind of use yet.

Anyone who wants to purchase a brand new Echomap50S ?

    I'm switching to Lowrance :(
