Is there a way to copy a G2 microSD card (v. 2012) so it can be used with homeport? I'm convinced that if I continue to swap mine in and out of my GPS I will surely damage or loose it.
All maps/charts that come on Garmin pre-programmed cards are locked to the original card. You can copy the card but if you use the copy you'll get a message (in a unit or BaseCamp) saying that they need to be unlocked.
Should I purchase mapping for my GPS on a disc, pre-programmed datacard, or as downloadable content?
Also of interest.
How do I update my pre-programmed BlueChart g2 and g2 Vision card?

Yes. Just copy the entire card to another (blank) card or copy it to your computer desktop and then to a blank card. This is what I've done.
Copies won't work in plotters and such but they work fine in homeport.
