New Laptop, what is the procedure? Backup/Restore OR export OR....??

Ok, I just got a new laptop. aaaargh!!! Going to take me weeks to get it setup....

So what is the best procedure for moving HP over to the new laptop?

It should be, but will this work?
1. Install HP on new laptop.
2. Run the "Backup" in HP on old laptop.
3. Copy the Backup file to new laptop.
4. Run Restore in HP on new laptop.
Done.

But I have a feeling that won't work since the backup does not back anything up apparrently. :(

So what do I do instead?
  • Send everything to your Garmin unit or to a SD card containing a Garmin folder. Than on your new laptop, instal HP, connect your GPS or SD card, it reads the device, and all items appear in the lower left screen if u select your device. Than select all items in the lower left screen and drag it it all to the "my collection" folder. Your done.
  • Yep, do a fresh install of homeport, copy your data from the old PC to an SD card, insert the card into the new pc and copy it to homeport. No need to try anything else.

If you have everything on your Garmin device, you can just download it from the device to an SD card, then copy it to the new PC.

A Backup and Restore should have worked as well? Did something go wrong there?
  • I routinely move my latest versions of routes and waypoints from one PC to another and to the boat so I wouldn't have tried another way. Of course, that's me and there is more than one way to do it.
  • I have not tried anything YET. I will re-install HP and then try a Backup and Restore.... thanks.

Basically, my quesiton was: "Is the Backup/Restore now working the way it is suipposed to?" The old version did now work properly. It just backup some stuff, but would not restore a complete HPO setup.

Copying the data to/from my Garmin device or SD card would NOT do me any good. First, my device does not get loaded with all my data. Second, my data in HP is stored in a bunch of folders and some sub-folders to organize it properly, neither of those can be done completely or easily on the SD or Device. Laslty, I have 3 different Garmin devices, each with different data on them from different folders within HP.... ;)

Definitely do the backup then. If you have trouble for some reason with restoring your data, we'll be glad to help. But I use Backup and Restore in BaseCamp all the time, and it's working for me. (HomePort pretty much uses the exact same mechanism.)
