Where is the Homeport for Dummies Thread?

Hi, I have HP, a Garmin 745s, and G2 Vision card. I've read where I need to have a separate SD card available to transfer waypoints and tracks and not to use the G2. Can someone please explain this to me since I don't think the 745 has internal memory. Sorry for such a vague question but hopefully someone knows what I'm talking about.

Thanks

The 745 does have internal memory.

I think that people are telling you not to use the G2 card for data transfer and instead use a second card so that you can keep the expensive G2 card write-protected so that you don't accidentally erase your map.

In general, user data (ADM) files aren't that big so you could go ahead and use the G2 card for data transfer anyways. What you especially wouldn't want to do is copy the 745's built-in map over your G2 card from the 745's data transfer menu.

So I can add waypoints in HP, upload them to a blank SD, then upload in the 745, and then put the G2 card in and the waypoints and tracks will be there? Also, while having the G2 in, if I save a waypoint, that will be saved to the 745 and then later I can upload that new waypoint to the blank SD?

    Thanks Hikerdave

The 745 keeps a database which can be replaced or updated from the contents of the card, or saved to the card.

Use the Information->UserData->DataTransfer functions to move data between the ADM files on the card and the 745s internal database.

For instance, if you've created an ADM file for a specific trip using HomePort on the card and planned a route, you insert that card and copy or merge the ADM file onto your device. (To create an ADM file on HomePort, you simply drag a data list or set of data items onto the card, or right-click on a data item and use "Send To".)
  • I find the HELP button on Homeport to be useful, but you do have to be on-line.
