HomePort and Hardware

You guys are killing me.

HomePort can create routes with an apparently unlimited number of "points" or turns. Garmin hardware devices have a limited capacity for points and apparently this varies with the device.

My 5208 can only handle 250 points per route.

I'm sitting at an anchorage, leaving tomorrow to continue my trip and when I try to load the routes for the next legs, my 5208 truncates the routes because they have more than 250 points. I'm having to break them up into smaller segments but HomePort does not have a way of counting or displaying the number of points in a route. MapSource had this feature.

I'm having to duplicate each route, delete half the points from one copy and the other half from the other copy, then try them in the plotter to see if each new leg has less than 250 points.

There has to be a better way.

You can do that in HomePort, with the data view and the route filter.

Hit Ctrl-Tab to switch to the data view, and then toggle the route filter (Ctrl-Shift-R, or just select the route symbol in the filter bar).

That's less than intuitive, but it does work to display the total number of points in a route.

What it does not do (and MapSource did do) is number each point in a route so a route can be split at a certain point if necessary.

Please consider this a request for future updates of the program.

If you select parts of the route in the properties dialog the stats will update and tell you how many route points you have selected.

So you can "Shift-Select" points till you reach the right number. Click on the first point, hold the Shift button, click on a different point, HomePort should select all the points from the one you first clicked to the one you clicked last with Shift, you can repeat that process as often as you like. You can also use the up and down arrow buttons while holding shift to change the selection, or the Page up/down buttons.

Obviously this is not the most straight-forward way, I am just trying to point out a work-around.

We will see if we can get the point index back in.
  • Thanks. That would help a lot.

Of course, an update to the 5208 allowing 1,000 points per route would be better but I know that's not your department. If you know these guys, perhaps you could suggest it to them.
