This is common problem across all Garmin units and software. It has been the topic of complaint many times. Here's one of the newer threads about it

    Compatible Waypoint Symbols

The only way I know of the create a list of symbols supported in your device is to create waypoints, one for every symbol, and then upload them into HomePort/BaseCamp/MapSource etc.
  • Another problem with Garmin hardware and software is differences in the capabilities of the hardware. For example, different plotters have different route and waypoint capacities. It is easy to create a route in HomePort that can't be loaded onto a 5208 plotter without being truncated.

The limit on the number of characters for route names is another problem. I tried loading my routes to a friend's plotter (different from mine) and it wouldn't accept some of the routes, I'm assuming because the first eight characters of the route names are the same. I'm going to rename them and try again.

The solution might be to be able to select the hardware device that is being used from within HomePort and HomePort would then know the limits of the plotter.
