Cannot load built in Map gmapbltin.img

I installed Homeport today. I copied the builtin map to my SD card from the gpsmap 440s. i can see it on the SD card (i think), size 900,304K. it is called gmapbltin.img. when i start homeport, i can see it start to try to load the gmapbltin.img, but there is a scrolling red line (not green), and after the red scrolls across, the internal map is not viewable in homeport, and it does not show up on the left pane.

i have updated the GPSMAP 440s software within the last week, as well.

the other data on the SD card, including a few waypoints and a route from the 440s do appear available in HomePort. the USERDATA file is loading, but the gmapbltin.img starts, but does not complete. any suggestions?

the first attached image shows the files on the SD card. the second attached image shows the program attempting to open the file gmapbltin.img.

is there a way to turn on a log or tracking so i can figure out why it does not open the map file?

thank you, todd
  • Since you haven't gotten a better suggestion, here's what I would do:

I would get a different SD card, a 2 mb capacity card, and I would download the maps from the device again. Then I would see if HomePort can read that copy on that SD card.

Let's see if that works. :)

    Hi Ron-

ok, that is what I will try. will report back in a few days, because the boat/gps is about 40 miles from house. i did call Garmin, customer support, as well. was advised to copy the map again, so I tried that today, same SD card, same result.

have you ever seen any indication that it would matter what was on the SD card before it was used on the GPS? or if the SD card should be formatted any particular way? FAT16, FAT 32, FATex, etc? or does GPS re-format cards that are put in? I was able to use that SD card to update the software on the GPSMAP 440s.

    thanks,

I used a brand new SD card today, successfully copied the built in map to the SD card from the GPSMAP 440s. when i put it in the card reader, the same thing happens. the Homeport sees it, but then does not complete the opening process.

AFAIK, all Garmin devices use the FAT32 filesystem.

I believe I may have found the culprit. All of the above, I was doing on a desktop PC with a USB plugged in card reader. I was able to download Homeport on a Laptop with a built-in card reader, and the map opened normall. I suspect the card reader is not right. I will try a new card reader soon.

It's good to see that some people can figure things out logically. If you have a PC without an SD card reader, it's probably a pretty old PC.

Since my desktop PC has only one SD card slot but two front panel USB slots, I bought an adapter that holds an SD card but plugs into a USB slot on the computer. It works just fine. I bought mine on ebay for a couple dollars but Staples and other companies have more expensive brand name adapters that should work.

Remember that HomePort will only read maps from an external card, you cannot copy them to the internal hard drive and use them. I'm not sure if this is a "feature" or what. ;)

    Ron-

Thanks for the tip about buying card reader on ebay.

I did end up buying one on ebay, and now the built in map loads properly on my PC. The price for the card reader to USB adaptor was only $1.50 (including shipping). Must not be too much profit on those, as the shipping was $0.44

It does seem like the card reader is somehow at fault, but i will never know the details, because this card reader works ok for some things, just not for others.

  • You're welcome. Glad you all up and running. :)
