File name lengths and ALL CAPS

I wish that Homeport would limit you to file names that your Garmin product limits you to. For instance, I have a 7212. All file names are in all caps and at some point become truncated.

Why does Homeport allow me to use Capital Letters like this and name files reallylongnames if the unit itself won't recognize it.

The real problem comes when you transfer data back in to Homeport. Then it doesn't see the original as being the same and creates TONS of duplicates.

Each device has its own limitations... add to that, different versions of the software on each device could have different limitations. Imagine writing a software like HomePort that needs to work with all permutations and combinations of these devices, especially when the software doesn't know at the time you create a waypoint whether you are going to use it only on your version 3.1 7212.

Imagine Microsoft word not letting you create a color chart because all you have is a black and white printer.

Just figure out what the limitations are on your device. When you create data, or at the point you send the data, make any changes you want to make it work the way you like.

    7212 similar question

Can you tell me what the naming protocols are for the 7212? I am about to import all of my routes, trips, and waypoints that I have edited in HomePort with small case letters and spaces and dashes. Does this mean that teh 7212 will rename everything to ALL CAPS and truncated?

    Thank you

It wouldn't seem difficult to have a "prefferences" setup in HomePort to enter the limitations of the plotter(s) you intend to use.

My issue is the number of "points" (turning points) in a route. The 5208 and others limit a route to 250 points, yet HomePort not only does not allow setting a limit, it provides no way to count the number of points in a route (MapSource has this ability). I have to export my route as a .gpx file, open it in excel, and use the row numbers to count the points, then figure how many more I can add to a route, or how many points I have to shorten it by.

On the other hand, it's a good value for $30 and it works.
