Printing routes using HomePort

Is there a way to print routes/waypoints/maps (or parts of) on a regular printer using HomePort?

Thanks.
  • I too am getting the message "Printing is restricted for the current chart product..." What is required to print the information?

x2 on "Printing is restricted for the current chart product..." problem

    x3.... I get that message too !
  • I too would like to say that having courses and distances are at the heart of navigation and should be printable. But I suspect that the real problem lies in the fact that all of the courses listed by HomePort are initial courses of a Great Circle route, not the Rhumb Lines we would draw on a Mercator Nautical Chart.

These errors would appear small on short legs of a route, but would become very substantial over large distances. This would be a can of worms to open up. ie:

Step 1 simple calculation of Rhumb Line from A to B

problem is this, is A to B a safe route as a Rhumb Line?

Step 2 allow displaying of your route as Rhumb Lines in HomePort so that you can make sure you are not navigating over that rock you were going to pass by at a distance of 0.1NM

Step 2 is very messy and the GPSr won't let you navigate that Rhumb Line route anyway.

Why would you create a route in the first place that did not have safe passage?? If you/we as users create a route, then Homeport can assume it's the route we want to take and is safe, and should print it.

We are not asking for it to print an auto-generated route of some kind like the "Auto-Guidance" feature on the 4000/5000/6000/7000 chartplotters. We are asking to print the routes we have manualled created.

    Plane Sailing vs Great Circle

    Neo,
Awesome feature!! Only there is one problem with it, the "directions" page does not contain any info other than a list of waypoints. Can you add to the list of ToDo's for the next version to include some details in the directions page?

It should print the bearings/headings to each waypoint along the way(forward and backward), and the time based on the current vessel selected and speed selected in each routes leg. Lastly a total section would be nice, totalling the distance and time to be traveled.

Right now it just prints a list of waypoints with distance of each leg.

I can see it looking like this:

    1. WP1 bearing 90 deg. mag/345 deg mag 2 nm 10 minutes
    2 WP2 bearing 180 deg. mag/0 deg mag 4 nm 20 minutes
    3. WP3 bearing 10 deg mag/190 deg mag 5 nm 25 minutes
    ....
    ....
    ....
TOTALS: Turns: 3 Distance: 11 nm Time: 0 hours, 55 minutes

    .

In response to your last reply, the solution you present here would not represent the great circle route you create with HomePort.

This approach would mean that HomePort would have to draw the lines as Rhumb lines (which it does not).

It is important to note that drawing a straight line on a mercator chart is not the shortest distance between two points unless it is a due north or south course or due east or west exactly on the equator.

HomePort uses the Great Circle Route which is the shortest route but also one that has a bearing to the waypoint that is constantly changing unless it is due north or south, or east and west on the equator.

This is why the 'single' bearing to the waypoint will not have you follow the line as it is shown in HomePort. Meaning that it may not be a safe bearing to follow depending on how long your track is and how close you tend to lay the tracks to hazards.
  • I realize this is an old thread, but nothing has changed... I just want to print what is under the Trip View tab when you click on a route. I don't want the chart, or anything else... just a simple from, to, course, distance, total dist, total time etc...

It's on the screen like that but when I print, all I get is that goofy waypoint list that while it has some of the info, it doesn't have all of it. What is even more interesting is that the first tab the "Properties" tab, allows you to copy'npaste the waypoint info, but none of the other tabs (trip view, time view, fuel view) have the copy option.

This could be great software.. but alas it's only useful for moving things to my GPS... and it doesn't do that all that well either.

Actually, they did fix/change this. If you highlight a Route, and then select File, Print, you will get a preview of a chart with the route on it. The next page of the print preview (click NEXT PAGE at the bottom) will show you a list of waypoints in the route, distance and bearing for each leg of the route. Click print to print it.

The one thing that is still needed however, is the ability to print the route in REVERSE. So you can get the correct bearings in reverse, otherwise yoru doing math (subtract 180 from each bearing) to get the corrected reverse route.

OH, PS, you must first switch the chart your viewing to the GLOBAL chart before printing the route, otherwise you get the "Printing Restricted" error.
