Route symbols

A few days ago I loaded "HomePort" onto the laptop that I use for navigation on my sailboat. It is quite a bit different from the Blue Chart CD program that I'm used to, but it seems to be running at an acceptable speed, so I'm sure I'll get used to it after I use it for a while.

One thing that I noticed right off the bat was the use of an "anchor symbol" as the default waypoint symbol. I've gotten into the habit of creating a waypoint each time I drop the hook (for use in the future) and THAT symbol is appropriate for that use, however when I create a "route" using HomePort, the "anchor symbol" is place at each computer generated waypoint (intersection) along the route. I'd like to see an option that allows me to set a "default" waypoint symbol so that the waypoints along a route will have the symbols that "I" want to use, rather that the program uses. Blue Chart allowed that and it worked really well.

Thanks,

Chief Trip

I emphatically second the notion of having some alternative or alternatives to that anchor waypoint symbol. It takes up way too much room on the chart.

I third the motion Anchor out.

Anchor is a symbol for ancorage, a place to anchor up for the night. It should not be used as a route waypoint symbol. A small dot is fine as it is not really a waypoint.

I agree that it should not be a true waypoint for the reasons you mentioned. We just need the symbol changed or a way to select a different one.

    Thanks
  • Somewher (I think it is in MapSource), these "waypoints" are reffered to as "turns" which is what they really are. I too would like just a dot, nothing more.

Strange, but if you create a route in MapSource, the turns are marked by flags. If you then import the route into HomePort, they become the "little dots" that I prefer.

That's sort of a solution, but only if you have both products and only then if you have the maps you need in MapSource. Even then, at least for me, the MapSource maps are not as current as the ones from my 5208 that I use in HomePort.

At this point, I find myselk using both programs and copying routes back and forth to access different features. In the words of one of my former IT co-workers, that is "less than optimal". ;)

Seems like an obvious fix for a future release. Assuming someone from Garmin monitors this site, would it be possible to have them tell users that this is slated for a future update? I have been using the software for a week and this is one of the most obvious oversights I have seen.

Someone does indeed monitor this site. There have been many suggestions from users like you and me.

I suspect they are working on these suggestions for an update but I don't think they can predict when it will be available.
