Homeport Incredibly Clunky and Slow

I have two PCs, both with XP, 2GB RAM, DirectX 9, latest drivers. Homeport is unbelievably slow, like it is running in DOS. My PCs exceed the requirements...the laptop is a late model duo processor. There are posts on The Hull Truth with similar complaints. Anyone figure this out yet (no one has on the other board)?

Thanks!

Just tried the newest update and the performance is no difference. Same as before and the same other people with the problem of "clunky". Delays with the screen interactions and responses with anything that is done. Absolutely no difference, completely unusable.
  • I updated HP to the new version. HP used to run VERY VERY slow. Now it just runs VERY slow intermittently. It is a noticable improvement at times but clearly some things still need a bit of work. Running XP with all OS and driver updates.

    Slow!

Just downloaded homeport tonight. Computer exceeds 'requirements' GUI is slow...same issues as everyone else.

WHEN IS IT GOING TO BE FIXED GARMIN?
  • Garmin? Hello Garmin?

Any word on another update to address the horrible speed issues?

I'm using a two year old Toshiba laptop with a not so fast processor, XP, and 2G of ram. Just started using HP a week ago. It takes about 8 or 10 seconds to load (slow) but seems fine in every way after that. Those of you with problems might want to quantify the time to do two or three given tasks.

You might also want to look at any other applications that you are running concurrently with HomePort including background applications such as virus or spyware protection.
  • I am a new Homeport user and also found the program to be UNBELIEVABLY S L O W !!!!!!. I upgraded my memory figuring that was the problem and made sure that no other programs were running in the background. I have spent the better part of the past 30 years in the technology world (professionally) and am extremely computer literate. This program is just clunky and for the most part unusable.

Every time I enter a waypoint I have time to go get a cup of coffee until the screen refreshes to allow me to do something else.

Garmin - you really need to fix this program (or go back to writing software in DOS). This is 2010 - haven't you heard of AJAX, Java, and other modern inventions. This looks like Windows 3.1 stuff.

I love everything else that Garmin does and have multiple Garmin devices for my boat, my car, and handhelds. Homeport needs to be brought in from the dark ages.

I have been around a while and one thing I have learned in life is that it's usually counterproductive to insult a person or company at the same time you're asking them to do something for you.

That out of the way, perhaps it would help the folks at Garmin if you would specify details on the computer(s) you are using, video card, etc.

Homeport works fine for me on my Dell desktop and OK on my Dell laptop. Both are a little long in the tooth.

    Floppy Drive

When I use HomePort my floppy drive clicks every second looking for a disk. It annoyed me so much I disconnected my floppy...Then HomePort became unusable as mentioned previously. Reconnected floppy and bingo it was up to speed again. I am guessing HP is scanning media to try and find maps and this auto map finding facility is causing the problem.

My guess is that you would have to also delete the drive in your computer's setup. If the computer "thinks" it has a floppy drive and it doesn't, that could be a problem.

Didn't they stop putting floppy disc drives in computers about ten years ago? I bought an external USB drive with my laptop but haven't used it in years.
