Homeport Incredibly Clunky and Slow

I have two PCs, both with XP, 2GB RAM, DirectX 9, latest drivers. Homeport is unbelievably slow, like it is running in DOS. My PCs exceed the requirements...the laptop is a late model duo processor. There are posts on The Hull Truth with similar complaints. Anyone figure this out yet (no one has on the other board)?

Thanks!

Seems like your computer meets the minimum system requirements listed here.

HomePort can take a few minutes to read maps off of your SD card when you connect the card for the first time. When you say that HomePort is slow, are you talking about this delay? Otherwise, can you elaborate on what you are doing when it is slow? Is it when you pan/zoom the map or is it slow when you click anywhere on the interface?

ANY and every interaction with the GUI takes 10 to 60 seconds. For example, clicking the initial dialog box, selecting an item from the toolbar (hand or arrow), panning, right clicking... I do mean any and every interaction. I have two PCs: a Pentium 4 ASUS with 2GB RAM and with 2/3 HDD free running XP Pro and similarly, a DELL duoprocessor laptop with 2GB RAM running XP Home (the OS is current on both). FWIW, I am an expert level user in PC software and hardware. Also, I have Nobeltec software on the desktop that I can run and it has absolutely no issues, nor does MapSource, nor Office 2007...nothing except HomePort, which is basically unuseable. With all processes shut down, including antivirus, and HomePort preferences set to minimums (e.g., minimum detail), it takes easily 15 minutes just to draw a simple route with a few waypoints. Also, there are similar complaints on the board "The Hull Truth." Oddly, some report, old beater PCs have no problems...I could try my Pentium 3. I want to get this resolved...please advise. Not having HomePort makes it difficult to get full utility from my brand new Garmin multifunction display.

    Forgot to add...

The Homeport delay is independent of whether there is anything in (or not in) the USB slot (SD, flash drive). It is ALWAYS impossibly slow on both PCs.

i have the exact same issues as ADSAGER. My system also exceeds the requirements. lenovo 2.8ghz dual core Pentium and 2gb ram. I have a crappy laptop that it runs fine on and also a mac with winxp runs fine. but the lenovo does not and that is the computer i have designated for this task. MS runs just fine on this machine.

With ADSAGER's help, we were able to ascertain that some performance improvements we have in place makes the application much faster. The next release of HomePort will have this improvement.
  • When will that "next release" be?

I've been holding off doing anything with it, till some of the known exisisting kinks get repaired, and some additional features are added.

Happy Holidays to the "Homport dev team", if there is one!! ;)

Just bought the software - it's almost unusable because of delays

Just bought the Homeport software which I as very satisfied MapSource user has been looking forward to in order to have the same functionality with G2 Vision as with Bluechart.

Right now I'm considering to have my money refunded as the Homeport software is almost unusable. This is for the following reasons:

    - There are delays whatever I do to interact with the application: Choosing a menuitem, panning the map, loading a file. Whatever! These delays are typically from 2 to 10 seconds.

    - The application crashes each time i try to load it if a former map is no more present - e.g. if I unplug a SD-card with a map.

    - The application tells me that my unit has a new update. While this is great it is unable to connect to the device (GPSMAP 620) and update the software. The Garmin WepUpdater could do this update instantly with no problems, so neither the update nor the device was faulty.

I will give the hopefully very busy Garmin Homeport developers time to come out with a new release - but not forever. I'm obviously not the only person experiencing these problems, so it's in the software - not the computer.

By the way - my pc is an Intel Core i7 4x 3,6 GHz, 6 GB RAM, 3 TB disk and a Nvidia 280 GTX video card. These specs should be sufficient for running the Homeport software.
  • I can only say that HomePort works fine on both of my (Dell) PCs. One is an Inspiron 6000, the other a XPS 400. Both run Windows XP.
  • When will that "next release" be?

I too would like to know when a performance update is expected. I just purchased and installed Homeport. My PC more than meets the requirements and is Homeport is VERY VERY slow.

    Please advise.

    Thank you.
