My Homeport for Mac has crashed!

I've been thrilled that Garmin FINALLY finished Homeport for Mac. For the past month Homeport 2.0.0 has been working fine for me. It was so nice to be able to pass routes from GPSNavX directly to Homeport then to my Garmin 440s.

As I was reading about the basic chart on Homeport, I read that I could use the charts from my 440s and downloaded them to my 2GB SD card with my USER DATA. It worked fine and I had the same charts on Homeport.

The problem came when I tried to transfer a route to the 440s SD card. All of a sudden I get an alert that my SD card might be locked. I checked the info on the card and can see that it says READ ONLY and I can't find a way to change it.

Then to make matters worse I am now getting alert that my Homeport is out of date. I tried downloading a new copy and re-installed it. It now tells me I need to update to 2.0.1 but an alert tells me that dmg 2.0.1 isn't recognized and the program crashes.

Please help!

    Pete,
Sorry to hear you are experiencing problems with HomePort.

Issue #1: SD card is READ ONLY

There is a small tab on the edge of the SD card that will force the card to be READ ONLY when it is in the 'LOCK' position.

    Issue #2: dmg 2.0.1 isn't recognized

Have you tried downloading a fresh copy of the 2.0.1 dmg? It is possible that the file got corrupted during the download process.
Are you downloading from the Garmin website or thru the Mac App Store?

    Thanks

Yep! I never realized there was a lock on the SD card like the old floppy disks. I must have slid it accidentally. So that fixed the first problem.

For the second problem. I originally downloaded HomePort from Garmin and have been unable to find anywhere on their website to download 2.0.1. Do you have an address for the update website?

I wish I'd realized that the program was available at the App Store, it would have been much simpler.

    Pete,
Once you've purchased HomePort from the Garmin website you should be able to use the built-in 'Update' feature included with the application.
When HomePort first starts up and the computer is connected to the internet, it will check to see if you have the latest version installed.
If there is a newer version available it will drop down a sheet containing the change log between the two versions along with 'Quit' and 'Install Now' buttons.

To force this check after the application is up and running:
On the main HomePort menu bar navigate to:
    HomePort -> Check for Update...

Clicking on 'Install Now' will begin to download the update and once it has finished downloading it will automatically close HomePort and bring up a new window containing the update installer. In this case it will be 'Install HomePort 2.0.1.mpkg'. Double click on the icon 'Install HomePort 2.0.1.mpkg' to begin the update.

To verify which version of HomePort is currently running:
On the main HomePort menu bar navigate to:
    HomePort -> About HomePort

Right. It seems that's the problem now. I have indications that something is wrong with my 2.0.0 and when I try to update it using the Help>Check for Updates on the program it doesn't download 2.0.1.

    It says:

    UPGRADE AVAILABLE
"A newer version of HomePort has been downloaded from http://www.garmin.com/mac. You may restart this application to make the newly updated features available."

When I click on [Install Now] it says it doesn't recognize the 2.0.1.dmg. Then the program closes.

The problem seems to be that nothing has been downloaded.

Is there another way to download the upgrade program?

    Pete,
It sounds like you need to go in and manually delete the corrupted 2.0.1.dmg file that has already been downloaded to your computer. This will force a fresh copy of 2.0.1.dmg to be downloaded again from Garmin.

To accomplish this you will need to navigate to:
    /Users/*Pete*/Library/Caches/com.garmin.HomePort/SoftwareUpdates/
    and delete the 'HomePort_2.0.1.dmg' file.
Where *Pete* is the actually username on your computer.

If you are using Lion, the Library folder will be hidden in Finder by default.
To show the 'Library' folder in Lion, navigate to the user's home directory (*Pete*), select 'Go' on Finder main menu bar to display it's drop down list and then hold down the 'option' key to display the 'Library' folder and make it selectable.

I found the 2.0.1.dmg where you said it was. After deleting 3 times, it kept coming back each time and causing the same problem.

So I used AppCleaner to totally remove HomePort. Then I downloaded a new copy from Garmin at MyGarmin Downloads. It came is as 2.0.0 and after installing it the 2.0.1.dmg was back in the library.

It seems to me that the Garmin website has a corrupted 2.0.1.dmg file that is being download.

I really appreciate your help on this.

Thanks to your help, I have finally been able to solve this problem.

After several more failed attempts, I once again used AppCleaner to remove HomePort. I also went into the library>cache and removed the software update 2.0.1.dmg to trash and erased it.

I then went into my time machine and reinstalled the original program that I'd downloaded from Garmin.

This time after it started up, it was able to download 2.0.1 and I was able to install the update.

It's all working well and I'm enjoying the fact that I no longer need to run a virtual PC on my Mac and can now after two years with my Garmin 440s transfer routes to and from my MacBook Pro.

Thank you again for your help.

    Cheers,
    Pete
