Map in output (export) of VIRB?

After the Issue with the decimal devider was known, I managed to try things out.
The following things came to mind.
Is it possible to have the map to be included in the exported video?
Are there troggle switches for things to be includes/excluded in the video, like speed and hight?
Video without map:

Video with map:
www.youtube.com/watch
As you can see the icons of the start, end, and current location are a bit big.
Besides when you zoom in, the red dot (current location) disappears from the visable part.
Is it possible to have the map auto-centered around the current location? (possible an on/off switch)

    Thank you for your feedback.

VIRB Edit 2.1 will definitely fix the decimal divider/display of track on map issue. It will be available soon.

We will provide more options for overlays and the capability to turn on or off different overlays in a later release.

Unfortunately we cannot export the map along with the video. Microsoft/Google would not be very happy about that. We looked into it, but it's not doable under the license we have.

Having the map auto-centered is something we will be looking at for 2.3.

The license you have from MS or Google? Knock, knock, excuse me uh, you are a GPS company !!! You don't have MS or Google maps in your GPS units !!!

Garmin does not own the maps they are using.
The maps are owned by a company formerly known as Navtex.
Garmin has a license for limited use, it seems exporting the maps is not included.
For commerial use (using a program made by a commercial company) you can't just use the Google or Bing maps, you will need a license too.
The hopes are for the use of Open Street Maps but that is on the list.
So for now the options are:
..Use the track as provided in the overlays.
..Capture the preview window with the map.
..Captuse only the map from the preview window and put the video and the map together in another program.
Maybe one of you can make a custom build gauge that will show the map, I can't.
  • Hi there,
Just got my VIRB Elite yesterday, moving over from Contour GPS enabled headcams that I've been using for a couple of years. I too was a disappointed by the lack of map in my exported videos. So I started a thread here: https://forums.garmin.com/showthread.php?212864-Exporting-VIRB-movie-with-map and was directed to continue discussion here.

With my Contour camera, and video editing software, I could post videos on their server where the gps track was displayed on a Google map on the side. Brilliant in the way that you could see map, elevation, speed etc on the webpage side by side with the video. Not so briliant when the server capacity was making it slow to connect. This could potentially be one way forward to get around license issues when including a map in a exports video.

For my own sake I would much more preference the possibility to add any picture of a map I would want myself and have the gps track being visualised on that. I bought the headcam because we are going to use it in my orientering club when analysing technical training, and being able to add the orientering map in the tool and to watch how you move between controls and how it looks on the video at the same time is what I ultimately are after. There are some online tools to make this work now but they are cumbersome to use. Having it directly in the VIRB Edit software would simplify the process a lot, and make this camera the obvious choice for someone who would like to do this.

    Thanks
    Stefan

    Hi there,

I investigated the Contour GPS (Contour 2? - I can't remember the exact name now) a year or so ago when I was looking at all the action cameras available. What are your opinions of it, and how does it compare to the Virb Elite (which I also chose)? My 2nd choice was the Contour.
  • Though you can’t export the Google or Bing map, you can add a track overlay which essentially gives you similar results.
    1. Open a Project that has GPS info (FIT/GPX)
    2. Select the Overlays tab (looks like a Gauge)
    3. Select the Gauge tab
    4. Scroll down the Gauges “Type” list and find “Position”
    5. Expand “Position” and select “Track”
    6. Drag and drop a track into your video preview window
    7. Adjust the track position in your preview window until it’s to your liking
    8. Export
    9. The Track displays in the Exported video

I've attached a screenshot, please view it below

    HI All,

    thanks PA3FBO for the hint.
Maybe one of you can make a custom build gauge that will show the map, I can't.

Its very easy to do this, first create a background image from a screen shot google earth/maps or any other map source (or use tools like mobile atlas creator to create a *.png map) of the region of your track.
    Open virb edit.
Goto overlays, cloon a trackline overlay give it a new name like mapbackground, in the gauge editor add image (select saved map.png).
Drag this meter into your video, add trackline on top of the map, goto advanced editing in the gauge editor of the map and adjust height and width so that it matches the trackline, takes a couple of minutes to do that. It seems that you have to stretch the map width to match the trackline?
This way you can place any map as a background to your trackline, gives you a lot of flexiblity.

    Matching Track with Image

    Hi,
I tried to superimpose my Track with an image screen capture ... yes I’m able to do this, but not perfectly. But, I have to edit videos for several hours of filming several times a week throughout the Province of Quebec, so this task is a bit tedious. The addition of this new feature would be a major step forward.
I do not know if a developer of Virb Edit like FALAGAR could confirm if this function is possible in the near future.

I am sorry I started a new thread with similar content. I guess I didn't search for the propper words.
