Battery drain so inconsistent

Fully charge VA3 via wall , not PC, charger and the drain is over 5% per hour, giving around 17 hours of usage. This persists for the next 4% when the drain starts to come down to 0.7% per hour.
Do the same but turn off the VA3 when fully charged and the initial drain is 0.3% per hour. Around 40 minutes later its 0.7% per hour.
The VA3 is on 3.4, but this happened on 3.3 and 2.9 - not unexpected as none of the change logs suggest improvements to battery life.
Perhaps the more worrying issue is the battery drain during an activity. On 2.9 it was around 10% per hour. On 3.3 more like 16% per hour. I could accept 10%per hour but 16% is a real problem. I need the walk activity to record a 7 or 8 hour hike. Just about possible at 10% per hour but impossible on 16% per hour. Yet the VA3 is capable of only using 10% battery per hour, so it seems to me that although the firmware change logs don't mention battery improvements, some changes are adversely affecting the battery life.
It's 6 months since the launch of the VA3 and poor battery life has been widely reported.
So Garmin when are you going to fix the poor & inconsistent battery drain?

After using the Web Updater, and making a factory defaults reset, nothing changed. I logged the battery drainage, it's shown on the picture as a chart. The device completely depleted from 100% to 0% in 30 hours, with minimalist usage and all battery saving possibilites set.

Just chiming in. I'm having the same problem. Was getting 6-7 days a couple weeks ago and now I'm down to 2.

I updated to 5.20 last night and I have a 0.541%/h drain for the last 20hrs.
I have had abnormal battery drain in the past but a soft reset always solved that.
  • Maybe my experience will be able to help someone. My watch was discharged in three days allways. It remained possible, 20-30%, but it definitely did not last the next day and I recharged them every three days. Once I decided to wait for them to completely discharge and shut down. By the evening, 20 hours I had 2% and decided to wait on. At midnight I had 1% and decided to wait until morning. In the morning at 7 o'clock it was exactly 0%. I waited on. 0 remained the next 4 hours, after which I had to leave and I set the clock to charge. After that, my watch with the same load (about 1 hour of GPS activity per day) began to last for four days with a reserve of 10-15% by the evening, which I think is quite satisfactory. It seems to me that the battery charging controller behaves in a strange way and as a result, the clock shows strange results. It would be interesting if someone with a bad battery had the same test as me.
  • I had never had an excessive expense without explaining the battery, until one of the last updates.
Calculating a bit I think that battery consumption doubled, from consuming 7% daily without counting activities to approximately 14%.
Anyway it does not affect me since I charge it every day when I spend some activity and the charge is super fast as from the first day.
