HR/ANT+ dropouts may be fixed with Sensor Version 5.8

There is another topic regarding an upgrade to sensor version 5.8.
I took this upgrade today via Garmin Express.
Later on I did an indoor cycling workout with the Garmin ANT+ speed sensor and using on board HR.
For the first time I did a workout (33 minutes ling) without any dropouts.

For those with this ANT+/HR dropout issue, please take the upgrade and report back.

Hopefully you can have a workout that looks as clean as mine.

  • Garmin-Blake, thank you very much for the update! Appreciate the transparency. Are you or the testers/developers not able to reproduce the issue? Is there anything I/we can do to help? Maybe enable an advanced debugging mode or such on the watch? Feel free to message me. Thanks.
  • kgarten Let me clarify on my last post. I was merely trying to express that we have made improvements on this issue but unfortunately it seems like these improvements have not resolved the issue for all users which is always the goal. I was able to recreate this personally with previous software versions but I can't any longer. We are able to reproduce this internally (just not with my own device) and are using this information to find a permanent resolution. We will not hesitate to reach out to our users with requests if there is any additional information you can provide and appreciate the offer truly!
  • Garmin-Blake so what you are saying is that all these problems we see are not hardware related, and there is definite hope they will be fixed in the future?

From what I see, as Garmin-Blake says, the problem is not completely resolved, but Garmin appear to have a made a workaround so far.

It seems to me that Garmin can detect when the failure occurs and then restart the transmission. Therefore what I see is that there is a frequent dropout of broadcast HR, but it does recover. Previously there was no recovery.

Hopefully a full fix comes soon.

I have had this watch since early December. There has been no workaround made by Garmin. When the On-board HR drops, the ANT+ device drops as well. It has always been that way. And it has always recovered. It happens frequently during workouts.

There has been no improvement or workaround applied since I purchased the watch.

I am thinking there is a HW issue with the On-board HR causing this problem. Not sure if software can fix this.

    +1
  • I'd say - question of the day is: is there hardware fix for it? Or redesign (practically creating new device) is required?
  • I think we at least deserve to know if this problem can be written out or if our VA3s need replacing, in it's defence, I'm getting on really well with mine baring this irritating problem
  • I have a feeling that Garmin still hopes to fix this problem, thus keeping mum about nature of it (understandable). And totally agree - these days Garmin hit the bullseye with devices lineup. Fully featured, yet with flavours devices (Fenix, Quatix, Descent); Mid-range, sport oriented - 935; Lower ranges - 635. And then high end "consumer" class (lifestyle) - Vivioactive 3, Vivomove HR, all those other "Vivo" (trackers). And last addition - "sport prosumer" - 645M.

And yes, I am also getting alone with Vivoactive 3. By using external Heart Rate. Yet waiting for weather to go outdoor, where GPS will kick in. And hope for fix, of course.
  • Well, to add water to the well, I normally see the drops when using my bicycle with the trainer. and not only with the VA3 but also with the new Edge 1000 I just got. I am using latest FW for both units, and garmin speed and cadence sensors, as well as wahoo sensors for the same.
