HELP: Sleep tracker not working and notification overload

I just bought my vivoactive 3 three days ago and am trying to decide whether to return it or not. For running it works like a dream. As a smart watch I'm not so impressed yet. Specifically I am having two frustrating problems. First I have worn it to bed twice and both nights I can see heart rate data but the sleep tracker says there is no sleep data and advises me to wear the device at night. I can't imagine what I am doing wrong here. It does not seem like this should be a complicated thing to do, but it is not working.
Second I keep deleting all my notifications and my watch face will say there are no messages but minutes later I will have dozens of notifications while my message counter still says zero. Worse the notifications are days or weeks old and often are ones I have already seen. Again this seems like a function that should just work and I can't see any obvious settings I can change to fix the problem.

For what it's worth Garmin has always sucked with sleep tracking. It's ridiculous that you have to "tell" them the approximate bed and wake up times. It's 2018, big data is old news and AI is not simply a hype any longer. They should have all the necessary data to create a trusty algorithm for sleep tracking. These calculations happen on the server side (Garmin Connect), not on the device itself, so I wonder why they are still doing it so badly.

I used various Fitbit devices before, with and without HR, and they have always been spot-on, within a few minutes. Didn't matter if I went to bed at 11PM or after a night out at 8AM.

On my VA3 with latest updates it works like a charm. I've set "go to bed" times, but it tracks sleep in any range during night. Haven't testet afternoon sleep yet.
