WiFi and Connection issues

Hi...
I bought the Index a couple weeks ago.
First Impression - great.
Finally a scale that works with WLAN and the Garmin Portal.

After 3 days, it had a Problem finding my Router mornings, blinking, searching for the router.
I used my cell phone and checked the WLAN Configuration, everything was ok...exited the Settings and stepped on the scale again, the Scale worked fine.

3 days later the Same Problem, no internet connection...
Again i had to enter the Scales WLAN Configuration and exit the configuration (without changing anything) to get the scale to find the Internet.

2 Days Later...the same story
I tried the changing the Security settings (switched from WPA/WPA2 to just WPA2) in mey Router, still losing connection after 2-3 days of use.
I tried to use a different Access Point (Devolo WLAN 1200+), the Connection was lost the next day! Woke up, stepped on the scale and no internet. No Sync - even though i Setup the Devolo Access point the nicht before. the Access point works fine, my Cell Phone ist connected as well.

is this a Software Problem?
Anyone else having this problem?
The Scale is direct under my router, and the Devolo Access point was also an arm lenght away! Still losing the connection and no Syncing with the Portal

Anyone got this thing to work all the time?
Or am I missing a step in the Configuration.

Can anyone give me a tip?

Tim
  • You are right. Nobody from Garmin is here to help at all.

That is why I dont update my firmware on my router.

I've had my Index for about 8-9 month with no issues. But lately I've hade syncing problems. The scale is trying to sync every time after measurement , blinking WiFi symbol, but just ends up with a fixed WiFi symbol and a cross in the opposite corner.
Every 4-5days or so the syncing works as expected and all the data from the "non-syncing days" is also transferred.
Scale and router sits in the same positions for the whole 8-9 month.
Could daily weigh-in for 8-9 month effect the battery to the point that the WiFi-signal gets weaker?
That's the only thing I can think of that could have changed on my part.

I don't have any issue with my braodband connection so far. Serve me well.

Issue is with WiFi channel, check out this post for the details:

After going through most posts in this thread and trying 3 different routers I finally set one of the routers to US region and it just magically work.. Garmin got some ground to cover here tbh..
  • Just got my brand new Index Scale yesterday, spent some time trying to make it work. The scale seems to connect only to Wi-Fi networks set up by Android phones in the household. It's not such a big deal, but still we need to turn on mobile hotspot on our phones, not that convenient for a simple weigh in. I set up the same credentials (network name / password) on both my wife's and my phone, and it seems to be picked up well by the scale.

Now with my home Wi-Fi I tried the following:
    - Turned SSID broadcast back on
    - Switched from 5G to 2.4G band
    - Played with channel width from 20 Mhz to 40 Mhz
    - Changed the channel set up from Auto to 1, 2, 10
    - Tried an open network with default settings and no security / password
    - Tried connecting the scale via WPS.

Anything else I missed? Would changing the encryption from automatic to TKIP or AES help? Also, I didn't change the transmission mode to specific settings leaving it on 11 bgn mixed - would it help to try different settings here as well? Didn't try the latter - too many options in the list.

The scale connects to the network momentarily - I can see its MAC address appearing in the list, and even transmits some data, but never seems to operate normally. In some cases I manage to go through the set up well getting a tick symbol, in other I have a perpetual wrench icon on the screen. The end result is always the same - the scale won't sync to home Wi-Fi.
  • Is it possible that the issue is at Garmin's end? My scale connects incredibly unreliably too but I have noticed that the amount of time before it timeouts with the X varies.

I am not at all technical but I am wondering if there is a sequence of "handshakes" the scale has to perform with Garmin's servers, and that if it fails at one of these the connection fails. Perhaps Garmins servers are misconfigured/ overloaded?

I have a rock solid WiFi connection, full signal strength, and locked to channel 11.

I have had an index scale pretty much since they first came out and seems that the connection reliability has gradually degraded over that time, is it possible that Garmin's servers simply aren't handling the increased number of scales trying to connect to them?
  • Tried additional settings according to the guidance in the post #180 today:

    - mode set to 11b only (this immediately narrowed the channel width to 20 MHz and limited the transmissions rate to 11 Mbps - not an option anyways)
    - security encryption set to AES only
    - channel fixed to 10.

The scale set up the network well with a confirmation tick but failed to sync after multiple attempts. It synced immediately once I got back to my Samsung Galaxy enabled mobile hotspot network. I’m wondering if there’s a way to check its settings to replicate them on my home WiFi.

No, it is not a total solution.
Issue is definitely in the software or in the communication with the Connect backend.
I can see my scale connect, and i can even see it sending and receiving packages via ssl/tls and ntp protocols. Than some timeouts occur and the cross appears. So the wifi connection establishes well. I can even say that wifi is working 100% of the time, but the synch is working only ~5%.
  • I have problem with my WiFi switches and my WiFi printer after I flash my new firmware on my router.

So I never do it again and my Index scale and others are all working fine. I am able to roll back.

Try not to update your firmware router if you can control it.
