Backlight always slightly on

I'm having issues with the backlight always being slightly on when going to bed. When I hit the light button this obviously brightens up the screen, however even when backlight is "off" I'm still seeing some level of light on the face in a dark room. There doesn't seem to be any settings for fully off or backlight brightness.

My wife is a bit annoyed so I can't use it for sleep tracking until I can sort this out. Speaking to another garmin owner, this isn't and issue for other garmin users (Fenix 5s).

When the backlight is "off" it's still easily bright enough to read the time and cast some light on my pillow in a dark room. Can't notice it during the day though.

Anyone else having this issue?

see pics, camera doesn't pickup the brightness of "off" but you get the gist, off is definitely not "off" ciq.forums.garmin.com/.../1322105.jpg ciq.forums.garmin.com/.../1322106.jpg

    Hello,

    I have the same issue.
In fact I was having it since the beginning but thought it was "normal" lol ...

Sadly it's not the only issue on this watch and it's really hard for customers who are spending a lot on this device (not to mention other devices and accessories of the same brand we own) to realise they are beta testing it...

Anyway ... waiting for a fix now :-(

garmin-joey, any further update on this over the last month? i think this explains the cause of battery drain (as mentioned in another post). only had my watch 3 weeks, didn't realise this wasn't normal (had infact liked didn't need to light up like a christmas tree to see the time through the middle of the night ;)). i have the ability to return it to retail store, just wondering if worthwhile, or the next unit will be the same until a software fix is delivered.
  • I contacted support and below is the response I received....

"I'm sorry to hear about this issue. Can you send me a picture of the screen? I haven't heard of any defects with this watch, did you get this from our FAQ? Also please check your device settings to make sure always on isn't enabled.

    Menu > Settings >System >Backlight> During/Not During activty >Timeout. "

I pointed the service rep to this forum post. I'm hoping to hear back soon. I should mention that I sent my email to Garmin on a Monday and received a response on Friday. Come on Garmin, you can do better than that with response time!

I have one other oddity with my watch that I wonder if others are experiencing. I've tried two different brands of screen protectors for my watch (tempered glass) and neither fits. Both were too big. I'm wondering if others with the backlight issue have run into this too. Grasping at straws to see if the two are linked. I'll post another note in the forum to see what others are experiencing.
  • I ended up RMAing mine for this issue, new unit is fine 5DG02XXXX
  • RMAed mine for this and my new one is perfect. No backlight issue and my screen protector fits too .
  • My Descent Mk1 just started doing the same thing.

Any general update for other users that have not yet RMA'd? Is there likely to be a software fix, or recommendation is for RMA'ing (And if so, has anyone returned in aus, with an indication of turnaround time, as ideally I'm keen not to be without my watch for more than a few weekdays since i use it everyday).
  • Not clearly related, but might be interesting that a few FR210s had the same issue (I also have one, which has this symptom).

My 645M does this too, you can read the figures on the screen from the other side of the bedroom in the dark! It would also explain why the battery is only lasting a couple of days at a time...

Will monitor this thread for an update as to whether this can be fixed with a software update or needs an RMA

sheddy7 In investigating this issue, it appears that this is caused by an issue with the backlight and an RMA is required to resolve the issue.
