Firmware v5.20 user discussion / feedback

The release announcement for firmware version 5.20 certainly makes this sound like a compelling update:

Changes made from version 4.70 to 5.20:

  • Added support for Connect IQ 1.3.0 SDK. See the Connect IQ 1.3.0 SDK for a list of new features.
  • Added support for broadcasting optical heart rate over ANT to other devices during an activity.
  • Added support for phone apps to subscribe for more frequent data updates.
  • Added support for Apple Media Service - users can now control any active music player, e.g. Spotify, as well as volume (requires iOS 8.0 and higher).
  • Fixed an issue in which text on some Connect IQ watch faces may not display correctly.
  • Several improvements to optical heart rate.
  • Various bug fixes and stability improvements.

I'd managed to hold off updating to firmware v4.70 (from v4.60) for many weeks – after transferring the firmware file to my watch but dismissed the update manually – after seeing all the reports of issues, especially around garbled notifications, but the other night the watch somehow got updated to v4.70 anyway. I might as well take the leap and go to v5.20, now that it appears in Garmin Express for me several minutes ago.

Who else is game? :)
  • Perhaps, but I absolutely categorically pressed 'remind me' again, and much to my surprise it reset and started installing.

    .

I just connected the cable to recharge it, and I'm not even sure if I pressed something by mistake when suddenly it restarted and installed the update.

Tomorrow I'll check everything on my run.

Have somebody tested the support to control another music apps on iOS?

That ought to upload the new firmware file to your Garmin device without asking you for permission first. However, even though Garmin Express may then tell you your watch is on firmware v5.20, it doesn't actually get installed until you disconnect the docking cable, and then press on the watch in response to the prompt to ‘Install Now’ (as opposed to selecting the other options on that menu, being ‘Remind Me’ and ‘Dismiss’).

I'd be pretty concerned if your FR235 spontaneously rebooted and installed the firmware update (in that order, or reversed) while still connected to the docking cable and your computer.

Have somebody tested the support to control another music apps on iOS?
If you've actually installed firmware v5.20 on your FR235 now like you say you did, could you please test it and let us know the results? Thanks.

is there anyway to move back to 4.6? im sick of 5.2 fw ;(
  • If anyone is totally struggling with this upgrade and want to revert back, you might be able to via the old beta version download. Version 5.07 beta and version 4.70 are in that download folder. I haven't ever attempted this and have no idea if it would work, so do so at your own risk.

I was able to revert back to 4.70. So far nothing adverse.
  • That's great, thanks for testing it. I might revert back today. I have a tough training week ahead of me and need accurate pace. The new pace bug will likely be a deal breaker for me.

Same crazy pace issue as others are having. It's all over the place. The pace notification is totally useless now.
  • Music Controls on my FR235 now work with Pandora on my iPad Air. Not that it matters, since I never run with it, and rarely use it to play music when I'm out and about with it in my backpack.

    Lol.

It's immediately noticeable, I updated about halfway through the day and when I checked my steps were still showing right after the calories burned had jumped up a few hundred.

The same thing happened to me when I upgraded to 5.20. In my case, the resting calorie increase was a welcomed change since I've had a hard time with major calorie underestimations on my Garmin. It wasn't unusual to have a 15,000-18,000 step day but only have 1700 total (Resting+Active) calories for the day. I will lose weight on 1700 calories.

Does this pace bug that everyone is seeing only impact Instant Pace, or does it also show an incorrect Lap Pace?
  • Lap and average pace seemed fine for me. It was just instant pace being a total train wreck.
