Firmware v5.20 user discussion / feedback

The release announcement for firmware version 5.20 certainly makes this sound like a compelling update:

Changes made from version 4.70 to 5.20:

  • Added support for Connect IQ 1.3.0 SDK. See the Connect IQ 1.3.0 SDK for a list of new features.
  • Added support for broadcasting optical heart rate over ANT to other devices during an activity.
  • Added support for phone apps to subscribe for more frequent data updates.
  • Added support for Apple Media Service - users can now control any active music player, e.g. Spotify, as well as volume (requires iOS 8.0 and higher).
  • Fixed an issue in which text on some Connect IQ watch faces may not display correctly.
  • Several improvements to optical heart rate.
  • Various bug fixes and stability improvements.

I'd managed to hold off updating to firmware v4.70 (from v4.60) for many weeks – after transferring the firmware file to my watch but dismissed the update manually – after seeing all the reports of issues, especially around garbled notifications, but the other night the watch somehow got updated to v4.70 anyway. I might as well take the leap and go to v5.20, now that it appears in Garmin Express for me several minutes ago.

Who else is game? :)
  • Applied the updates yesterday afternoon and did a treadmill run in the evening. The only problem was that my foot pod calibration was messed up and was reading 30-40 sec/mi slower than the TM was set to.

This was a gym TM which is limited to 1 hour sessions and since I was doing 9 miles I needed more time than that so when I had to pause the run to restart the machine I disabled the foot pod. Normally using the internal accelerometers in the watch gives me a faster pace than what the TM is running but it was almost dead on which tells me that watches own calibration had been changed as well.

Not a big deal, but curious just the same.
  • The mute/vibration shutoff has definitely been fixed.

It was an issue with the mobile app (it had been updated on the 5th) thats about when i noticed it. the app must set some settings that the watch firmware wasn't ready for?

they removed the fake noise in the HR graph to some extent, like how they make the Heart and HR line (weekly grph) red now... gives it some contrast.

so far so good for me. used a HR strap on a bike ride this morning - no issues.

    hr lock.

    Hi all.
I went a run this morning after updating from 5.07 beta to 5.20. I noticed HR taken an age to lock on and as another user noted my hr sat around 120 for around 20 mins before coming up to the expected rate of around 150-160.
I'll try again in the morning but a bit worried at the moment. Hopefully it'll clear up.

    Pace volatility

i've notice only one issue so far after updating yesterday night: during this morning run, the current pace fluctuated way more than it ussually does. Today i did an easy, constant pace run so i wouldn't expect that variations (one second it would show i'm running at 4:40 min/km and the next it would show 5:50 min/km. Has anyone else seen this?
  • phone freeze up continues...

well for whatever reason my phone will lockup on a email notification from my android phone (Samsung SM-G900V, Android 6.0.1, kernal 3.4.0) - which requires a reset (hold light(sun) button 15-20sec for it to clear).

Happens almost weekly...if not more. Didn't happen in the past...maybe last two weeks ? ugh

Not sure if it started when phone updated, Garmin App updated, or what (wasn't firmware 4.7update related)

was hoping the new update would take care of it... :(
  • Hi,

I lost my vibration/tone alerts as per other users earlier this week. I've now applied the 5.20 upgrade and hopefully this is fixed. Can anyone confirm if they've used since the upgrade and whether this feature is now fixed. I have a marathon on Sunday and had done my last pre race run this morning before upgrading and I'd like to know if everything is okay?

    Many thanks,

    Rose.

It's fixed going forward, but you have to go back into your settings - sounds - and turn your vibrate/sounds back on. The Garmin Connect update from a couple days ago screwed that up and set those to "off".

I went on a bike ride this morning. Same issue as yesterday. I tried three times to lock onto my heart rate. Waited two minutes plus all three times with no success. If I go to the heart rate widget, it takes about 20-30 seconds to lock on and then the heart rate will lock on when I select an activity. I put on a chest strap and it worked immediately. This wasn't an issue for me while using beta 5.07. So far, 5.20 hasn't worked well for me at all.

Ahh yes. Me too. Forgot to mention in previous post. My pace on watch was all over place; very erratic.
  • No GPS lock

    Hi,
Just updated to 5.20 through Garmin Connect and while I get a very quick HR lock (as reported by others), I just can't get a GPS lock, any suggestions?

    thanks
