How's your battery life with 9.0 firmware?

I've never been able to get Garmin's claimed 15 hours with my 820, but I have been able to go nearly 12 hours before receiving the "low battery" warning in the past.
Today, my first big ride since the 9.0 update, I hit 9% right at the 6 hour point, starting with a full charge. This seems completely unacceptable. Anyone have any similar observations?
  • Battery life and bluetooth are a nightmare, whilst I can pair my phone, as soon as I restart the Garmin for a new ride it will not connect to the phone, I have to pair again which takes ages !!!, abttery performance is worse, route calculations now take ages, I also went off course (cafe stop) and it took 3 goes at stopping and starting the course again before it picked up the course and gave me instructions, it is an absolutely rubbish upgrade, I have downgraded to 8.80 and will stay on that for the foreseeable future.
  • Update from previous post:

Mine i think is getting worst, after a full charged(100%) the night before when i turned on my 820 in this morning for a ride, battery dropped to 84% right away (not riding yet) connected sensors are Garmin Hrm,cadence and Di2 with edge remote. My backlight is off to save more juice.

Under this 9.0 update, aside from the shown features added is a hidden bug that is killing the 820's functionality, not to mention the Bluetooth connection problem which includes call/text notifications and the auto upload feature. Maybe thats just a few to mention.
  • My new one 820 (15 days old) was ok till the update to 9.0.
After the update I run for 2 hours and it still show 100% of battery.
Then suddenly after 3 hours it turned off with 0% of battery.
BT on, LiveTrack on, Backlight off (timeout 10 secs), only GPS (no GLONASS), AutoPause if speed less then 5km/h.

Probably from what I understand in your comments is that perhaps during the ride the device was not paired with the iPhone.

Maybe that's why the iPhone did not have so much battery consumption, but the Garmin was perhaps spending battery unnecessarily trying to pair with the iPhone.

Now that I think about it, you're probably right. My ride did not automatically upload afterward. I power-cycled, then manually uploaded (with 3% battery left on the Garmin).

For what it's worth, I completed a much shorter ride the day after (1h:45m), which only brought me down to 85% on my 820. That seems like a much more acceptable drain rate.

I can't complain (just used my 820 for the first time during the weekend (three days of cycling), and battery life seemed actually better than I expected, with the battery down to about half after about 8 hours of cycling during the day. I did put it to sleep for longer breaks and use no sensors at this time. I cannot vouch for the BT connection (uploading and livetrack seems to work fine though), as I use my watch (Fenix 5) for notification etc.
  • Have been experiencing similar poor battery performance since the firmware update. I suspect there is a bluetooth component to the issue as I'm unable to live-track (either with garmin, or strava beacon). The email with the link from garmin is not being sent at all, and although a text message was sent from strava, the resultant link claims that no ride data is being received. Oddly, I am able to auto-upload my ride data via bluetooth after it's saved.

More or less it drains 10% every hour. In warm weather conditions. In cold, it's 15%.

4h:21m ride today. Went from full charge to 13% by the time I made it home. Firmware 9.1
  • Not sure if this will help, but ran into similar battery issues with the 9.0 upgrade. Somehow, my backlight timeout setting had been switched to "always on". Dropping this back down to 15 seconds seems to largely resolve my issue. I cycle with cadence, speed, and HR sensors connected, usually with routing and LiveTrack, and with a BT connection to an Android phone.

    Good luck -

  • IDK if this has been discussed, but is the 820 actually running that low on battery or is the indication artificially low? I've had artificially low indications on other devices. In some of those cases, leaving the device powered on until it automatically shut off from low power seemed to re-calibrate the indicator making it more accurate.
