Lost Turn by Turn. Incorrect Distance to go Navigating a course

Lost Turn by Turn. Incorrect distance to go. Navigating a course.
Garmin
When following a track (TCX or GPX) I quite often get a problem where the 820.
a) Stops providing Turn by Turn.
b) Gives an apparently random distance to go (to complete the course). Often longer than the course.
c) stoping and restarting the course has been known to fix it on rare occasions. But usually the turn by turn is wrong (some random next turn either near the beginning or the end). The distance to go may correct temporarily after a restart but will at sone point become incorrect.

Usually my routes are between 50 & 100 miles. The end is usually near the start (within 500yds). They sometimes cross themselves.

The garmin going wrong is usually triggered by either going off course or by being turned off or going in to sleep mode when I stop for coffee.

If I ride the same route twice it won't necessarily fail in the same place.

This is a real problem when I'm in a strange area.
Nick
PS - a friend has the same problem on his edge 1000
  • The Nickdodo distance is definitely THE solution!
I try yesterday to finish an other route then those I was started and charge a route from total 98 Km (that passed on the road I was) at km 67 and indeed the 820 go to the end with a perfect guidance.
How could I be so stupid not think about this since a complete year ?? (or worthier Garmin)
  • Ok, I now have been riding 4 days in some minor hills in Germany, with courses downloaded from GPSIES. I know that these courses are valid and used by others on other devices. I downloaded them in TCX format.

First of all - the turn by turn navigation was useless. I could ride between to cities. The map screen showed me the course from city A to city B. This is all fine. Then the problems begins. Suddenly between the cities the TbT started to guide me into minor tracks and roads and service roads that the map and course did not show. I even have set the avoidance up to avoid gravel roads and minor tracks. And only use roads, since I am on road bike. So the TbT was useless. If I followed the instructions, I would then get a deviation warning, since I actually left the course, as I could see on the map. This happened so many times that I gave up and only used the actually map to see the course and find my way.

To me there is a problem with the way the 820 (re)calculates the route from course point A to B. It seems that the Navigation part and the actually course loaded is not working together and the turn by turn functionality lives its own life. Why can't Garmin get this to work?

Okay, I know Nickdodo said it was not his solution. But since most of us have seen his summary of this work around, I can also report after a few rides following a course after I've separated the start and end points by several hundred yards, my turn by turn AND the distance to next way-point / distance to finish has been flawless!

    Thanks!
