Firmware 5.10 Feedback Thread

Anyone want to guinea pig the new 5.10 update and provide feedback?

Based off my own experiences with Garmin, I'm always weary when a new update comes out. Still on 3.2 at the moment.

The changelog doesn't address any bugs so not entirely hopeful.
  • I've got a trouble after updating to firmware 5.10 with the clock. The current time, which is usually taken by GPS, is not correct/has changed. What can I do to solve this problem?

How far out is it from your time zone?

It sounds like it could be a missing or corrupt time zone map.

Look for the following file on the Edge.

Garmin\gmaptz.img, if it is missing then that is your problem. If it is there then delete it. Disconnect and reconnect the Edge to the PC so that i registers that the file is removed and then sync via Garmin Express. That should put the file back. If it does not then you can install it manually. Just place this file in the Garmin folder.

    Same here!

This seems to happen with every update for me - it is so annoying. Is there a trick I am missing? Is there a way to backup my customised screen settings?

Yes, all of my carefully crafted screens were erased after the upgrade (with no warning) and reset to factory defaults. WTF? I'd like to hear from a Garmin rep about this, whether this is a known issue and will happen on future updates. I'll be reluctant to upgrade again if I have to reprogram the device.

Hey Erich, I appreciate the detailed response! I think we're all suffering from some form of the same issues with the touchscreen. From my view, I think its unacceptable for Garmin to have a device that doesn't work in sub-optimal conditions.

I lived in an area that rained 6 months out of the year and my 510, while not flawless, worked much much better than the 820 did.

Sure, maybe its the capacitive screen at fault here, but that should have been tested prior to launch and either removed, or revised with a different screen/vendor/technology. This should definitely not have been launched as a $$$ product for its users to discover that "hey, it actually doesn't work when its raining or when its cold out".

Take your experience of sweating on the screen and multiply it by 10 to get what its like to operate the device in the rain (translation: impossible).

I think its important that potential users understand that this device is severely handicapped in its current state, further exacerbated by the fact that Garmin seems to be not acknowledging this issue.

Well I finally rode with the Edge 820 in the rain. It started off okay but after about an hour or a little less I noticed the screen was asking me to confirm cancel navigation. So I clicked no. Then the next time I looked down it said it again. So I answered no and then locked the screen. all was good for a little while but when I went to unlock the screen to turn sounds on it was a struggle to get to the correct screen and make the change. I finally got it done and re-locked the screen.

Since this day its been acting screwy. This morning in temps of hight 30's to low 40s (dry weather) the screen was ghost pressing buttons again and when I tried to make changes it would register in the wrong spot. I was mid activity to I once again locked the screen so I didn't lose the activity.

Seems I'm finally seeing these screen issues like everyone else. It was very difficult to deal with. But on a positive note, the navigation and re-calculating when I purposely went off course worked great!
  • I'm waiting for them to fix the issue with setting the power on trainers. That's NOT a small issue! That's part of the reason I bought the 820.

Well, was out on a group ride today and all (bar 1 on a wahoo) the other riders had Garmins, couple of them looking at their grouptrack asking me why they cant see me. I said 'maybe it turned off with the last update', went to have a look... couldnt even get the piece of junk to change screens, nevermind navigate the menu. A good old laugh from the 1000 crew !!!

Got home, let it cool down... went to upload ride, Garmin freezes, 10 second press on the power button... all the same old issues still there.

GoPro took a hit and recalled their Karma drone because it 'could' fall out of the sky, this 820 unit wouldn't even have taken off in the first place. What a expensive piece of crap ! Cant believe Garmin even released this with all the issues... and charged $650au for the head unit too. Wished I had bought a Wahoo.

I have 4 x Vivofits, Vivosmart HR, Vivoactive HR, Forerunner 220, a Nuvi car GPS, an edge 800, 810 now 820. If they dont do something drastic ASAP, it will be the the last Garmin product I buy.

Wished I had bought the Wahoo Elemnt also. There must be some serious hardware/software problems for Garmin to be so silent on announcing that they are even working towards fixing any of the well documented issues. Maybe their lawyers are already anticipating a major class action lawsuit coming their way regarding the Edge 820...

There has been an admin (Shawn) posting in here that they have documented the screen issue - https://forums.garmin.com/showthread.php?365492-820-Touchscreen-issues&p=924327#post924327 (and the elevation issue as well but I don't have the link to that.

I don't have full confidence they will be able to fix it but they haven't exactly been silent about it. They don't seem to have someone to monitor the message board and reply to the same questions and complaints multiple times so although they have replied before, its missed by many people. ...I think they need to add a sticky thread to the top for each specific issue to announce that they have heard the complaints and are working on it.

My 820 was perfect today. the weather was clear but 32 degrees F (0 C). I was riding on the map screen with HR monitor and speed sensor (and I think grouptrack running.) I was not navigating a course - just riding some known trails.

I've had major issues in cold weather and also in the rain in the past but I've also ridden in cold weather (clear skys) with no issues. I agree with what other have suspected in that the issues is with processing and not so much the touchscreen. The last three times I've had issues with the touchscreen I was following a course. The course navigation worked great but at some point during the ride I had issues with the touch screen not responding or ghost pressing. But other rides in cold, like today, where I was not using navigation, the screen gave me no issues - with full finger mountain bike gloves.

If this is in fact some kind of processing issue or even memory bug, perhaps this can be fixed a with firmware update???? Keeping my fingers crossed.
  • Pretty much the same, works OK not navigating, though the touch screen still takes deliberate touching and sometimes two or more repeats to get it to respond. And it usually takes a second or two to respond so you have to tap, wait to see if it responds, then tap again, wait, etc.. I have to stop to do any useful zooming and panning. This is the case with and without gloves. My old 705 with dedicated zoom buttons and a joystick was way way easier to zoom and pan. I agree that some of the response issues seem to be the processor being out to lunch.
  • Seems a Bit Better

Performed the critical update to Garmin Express a few days ago. The touchscreen seems to be working better (ridden 3 times and it only failed to perform once). Have not conducted a ride with a course yet, however. Eternally hopeful....
