Help with corrupt fit file

Former Member
Might as well start a thread for this like they have over in the 500 forum.

I've only had my 520 for a week, and I really like it. The only issues I've had so far are that sometimes the bluetooth requires me to restart on the device to work properly, and then tonights FIT file is really corrupt so I can't load it over to strava.

The online FIT tool doesn't fix it, and then I opened it in golden cheetah. It seems the timestamps are all whacky, where it should be increasing every second, but it looks like the stamps are becoming integer overflows. The data is there, I just don't know of a way to edit all of the timestamps by just setting them as monotonically increasing seconds after they start getting corrupt in the file.

Any ideas?

redgirlsays - FFRT reports your file is 100% corrupt.

I'm not sure how and when Garmin write the activity to the .fit file but I suspect all the data is held in volatile memory until the stop button is pressed and then it is written into a .fit file. If there isn't enough room on the device to write the full .fit file then you'll only get the data for what it can write.

How many completed and uploaded activities are still on your device? If it's any more than a months worth then consider archiving the older activities off to a folder on your computer.

Mike, Thanks for the help here. Still isn't working as expected. Looks like it now cuts at the halfway point. Basically what we did was rode to lunch, paused the activity, then started it back up for the ride home. somehow 50 hours got entered in between those events and I just need to remove the junk from the middle. it should read 2:04:35 of data. with your file it reads the correct summary, just not the HR, Cad, Speed, elevation, etc. Any chance of recovering the second half of the ride? again, i wouldn't care so much except TP needs this to calc my TSS and load. I wasn't supposed to do this ride but it was mandated by the wife, so I need to fess up to the coach with accurate data. He's buried me this week with training so I want all the credit for what I've done.

    Thanks so much!

Will_Borgers - there is 2hrs39min25mins worth of data in the file. I can trim junk out from the middle but I need to exactly where as my idea of what might be junk might not be the junk you're thinking of.

Have a look at this file.

Mike, you are the absolute man! This file worked perfectly! Thank you so much for straightening this out for me! How exactly are you able to get into the file and work on it? I've been using the garmin devices almost a year now and have had to through away 4-5 files because of this junk. I'm a total noob at diving deeper into the data than Garmin Connect or TP.

    Thanks so so much!
