Help with corrupt fit file

Former Member
Might as well start a thread for this like they have over in the 500 forum.

I've only had my 520 for a week, and I really like it. The only issues I've had so far are that sometimes the bluetooth requires me to restart on the device to work properly, and then tonights FIT file is really corrupt so I can't load it over to strava.

The online FIT tool doesn't fix it, and then I opened it in golden cheetah. It seems the timestamps are all whacky, where it should be increasing every second, but it looks like the stamps are becoming integer overflows. The data is there, I just don't know of a way to edit all of the timestamps by just setting them as monotonically increasing seconds after they start getting corrupt in the file.

Any ideas?

lost part of my ride data, can someone help me out?

Hi, i was riding last Sunday and did one of my best climbs ever. Unfortunately, as i got back home, i noticed that my Garmin Edge 520 stopped counting the distance and crashed. I was really "grrr" about this :) I waited that the battery goes empty, and managed to extract the file. Tryed to upload it to garmin express, but got a message saying that the file was damaged.

Can someone please make a wonder happen? It should be a 113 km ride with one of my best climbs ever :(

    Here is the file:

Thanks a lot for any help :)

    hi joaocrisostomo40,

Your file only contains 77km worth of data - this file contains what I have been able to recover.

    cheers

Hey guys, just spotted this thread now. Wondering if the dodgy GPS on this hill repeat session can be repaired. Not sure if that's doable. It's basically 5 laps of a hill, but the first lap is all over the place, GPS went nuts. Funnily enough it's only the first rep's data that I'm interested in, or else I wouldn't bother asking!

  • I had mixed results with firmware version 12.10 today. My 520 correctly recorded my morning ride to work and uploaded automatically to Garmin Connect with no problems. It then synced across to my other connected services as normal (Strava, TrainingPeaks and SportTracks).

My ride home was a different story. It seemed to record as normal. I saved it and it automatically uploaded to Garmin Connect. It then didn't sync across to my other connected services as I didn't get the barrage of notifications I normally get.

When I looked at Garmin Connect it was time stamped with the time I uploaded the ride, not the time it started. On the 520 it shows that it recorded at the correct time. I tried a direct upload to Strava. Strava told me the file was corrupt, so I ran it through an online file repair site (fitfiletools.com) and corrected the time of the file to the correct time. When I uploaded the repaired file to Garmin Connect everything then worked as it should. On the bright side, the ride recorded correctly in that the altitude profile is correct.

The file is attached. The correct time and date are 17:02 on 14 June 2017. If someone could look and see where the corruption occurred and suggest if there is anything I can do to prevent it happening again or whether it is something that Garmin will need to address.

I opened the file and I didn't receive any error msg, then I exported your data in a new .fit file so try to upload this version. :)

    Thanks for the help Mike,

i was able to upload the file to Garmin, altough have lost part of the ride. I think the 520 just stopped tracking the activity.

    Cheers.
