Help with corrupt fit file

Former Member
Might as well start a thread for this like they have over in the 500 forum.

I've only had my 520 for a week, and I really like it. The only issues I've had so far are that sometimes the bluetooth requires me to restart on the device to work properly, and then tonights FIT file is really corrupt so I can't load it over to strava.

The online FIT tool doesn't fix it, and then I opened it in golden cheetah. It seems the timestamps are all whacky, where it should be increasing every second, but it looks like the stamps are becoming integer overflows. The data is there, I just don't know of a way to edit all of the timestamps by just setting them as monotonically increasing seconds after they start getting corrupt in the file.

Any ideas?

    Hi Mike,

I've been in the software industry for a long time, and like to support developers like Mathias, but its Windows only and I don't have a current license to run in a virtual machine on my MacBook Pro. I downloaded the Garmin FIT SDK, compiled the examples, and played around enough to know how much time it would take me to fix the file. So I'm happy to buy a Fit File Repair Tool license but not until I have another reason to buy a Win 10 license and deal with the hassle of installing/maintaining Win10.

If you're in software, you might have some luck with this alternative https://pub.ks-and-ks.ne.jp/cycling/fitdump.shtml & https://pub.ks-and-ks.ne.jp/cycling/fitsed.shtml

  • Got home from a quick recovery ride, pressed save on the Edge 520 and it crashed and restarted. Got a corrupted FIT file that won't open on Edge or import to Connect. Garmin online fit repair tool won't work for me for some reason. Would somebody be nice enough and run it through the Fit File repair tool?

Also why is everyone suggesting to keep the number of files in the activities folders low? Surely 60 or 200 files shouldn't matter if there is enough space right?

    hi antrock,

FFRT reported that you had a small amount of corrupted data so your overall time/distance may not be correct. Give this file a try.

I export the files from my activity folder once a month onto my computer and I have only ever had 2 corrupted files on my Edge800. The reason that people suggest that is because it seems to be the magic bullet that stops files from becoming corrupted. I don't question the reason or logic behind, I just know that it works.

    cheers

    Thank you Mike,

It imported to Connect and the distance is correct, while the time is just slightly longer as it used the elapsed time instead of moving time. That is OK.

I will follow your suggestion and only keep the last months of activities on my device from now on!

  • Corrupted Time Data file

    Hello,

Can someone please help me fix this file?
It seems to be some time issues. I have tried several fixes myself, but my company owned computer has too many firewalls and limitations.

It was a race, and I did good. It would be a shame not post it on Strava

    Kind Regards,
    Henning Nilsen

    hi Henning,

Give this file a try - I think I have the date and the time right, if not let me know what they should be.

    cheers
