Help with corrupt fit file

Might as well start a thread for this like they have over in the 500 forum.

I've only had my 520 for a week, and I really like it. The only issues I've had so far are that sometimes the bluetooth requires me to restart on the device to work properly, and then tonights FIT file is really corrupt so I can't load it over to strava.

The online FIT tool doesn't fix it, and then I opened it in golden cheetah. It seems the timestamps are all whacky, where it should be increasing every second, but it looks like the stamps are becoming integer overflows. The data is there, I just don't know of a way to edit all of the timestamps by just setting them as monotonically increasing seconds after they start getting corrupt in the file.

Any ideas?

  • The 520 malfunctioned and didn't record any data for that chuck. That appears to be a bug in the Edge software that pops up from time to time.

If you have a link to the plotted route I could patch in the missing portion.

Edit: The 520 was working during that period so the total distance and elevation gain shown in Garmin Connect is correct. Other apps that compute those values from the data points rather than using the Edge totals will show less.

Hi, really appreciate you taking a look at this for me, thankyou - I did notice that the garmin connect app vs the strava upload of the data had different values, so this tallies with what you are saying.... in terms of fixing it, I do have the original plotted route, and it would be brilliant if you could patch that in for me - i'll dig it out.... although it isn't exact because we deviated a bit from the route on the day

what I also have though, is for that missing section, one of my cycling buddies was riding alongside me for literally the whole way, so if I could get hold of his fit file, could you use his route data to patch it in?

That would be best because the time and speed will be the actual values.

The time stamps had jumped to 2019. I have seen that a number of times. There must be a software bug that pops up from time to time.

The Fit File Repair Tool fixed the time stamps

    Fit Flie Help

Not my first erroneous fit file but first one I wish to recover.

Have tried a few auto fix tools no luck.. the activity where "successfully" imported to garmin (via phone on activity save), In my connect app on my android device the activity looks fine (hr, speed, cadence etc..) on connect.garmin.com the activity have mostly aggregated values, the track seems fine.
The activiy is not automatically syncronized to strava, and i'n not able to manually upload the file.. (after trying to fix the file using the strava suggested fix tool,, the activity becomes cropped.. and is cut of..

(the file is retrieved from the 520 using file explorer.)

    What to do?

This rather large fit file will not upload as well. Can anyone help?

OK, i hope this works, the dropbox link is the fit file from my cycling buddy who was with me - its from an edge 1000 - he left me for dead later haha, but at the section in question he was with me the whole time, so the route and speed etc should be very close to what i did

i've also re-attached my original fit file to have both in the same place on the thread

    many thanks again

    You're welcome.

Your buddy's cadence and heart rate are included in the patched in section. I have used the Fit File Repair Tool merge function to delete that data in the past but for some reason it can't always merge the files. I couldn't get it to work this time.

Plea for help - corrupt fit file

Any chance someone can repair the first file and stitch it with the second file? I did a big charity ride yesterday raising over £2,500 and my Garmin crashed 150 miles into a 190 mile ride.

  • Please help - bad time data

Hi. I could not upload the attached FIT file today to Strava due to bad time data. I have tried to fix it using the Corrupt time fixer with no success, with normalised time checked and unchecked. Is it possible for you to fix it please?

FYI, this was the first time i used a saved workout to manage a ride and autopause did not work as usual, so i had to manually pause and restart the recording at coffee etc

Training Peaks uploaded it with the following message (which is incorrect)
File contained a bad date of 6/10/2021 12:00:00 AM which was changed to 6/1/2016 12:00:00 AM

    Thanks

The Fit File Repair Tool gave an "Out of present range" error message when reading the file. But after uploading the file to Connect and choosing to export the original file, the downloaded file works.

  • Thank you very much, but the FIT file in dropbox is not my ride (would like to be riding in the UK summer though!). I didn't mention the correct start time for the ride, which was around 12.25pm on the 2nd June in New Zealand

    Cheers
