Using Bikemap GPX files in Edge 1030

I've only used my Edge to track metrics like heart rate, cadence, distance, etc. but am now riding further afield of my own house and want to start using other routes which folks have loaded onto the Bikemaps website (I found more good routes on Bikemaps than Strava which is why I use that service). I found a route on Bikemaps I wanted to try and downloaded the GPX file. I then connected ny Edge via USB to my desktop iMac and loaded the GPX file into the Garmin Course folder, but when I disconnected the Edge from the iMac and went to the Course Folder it didn't display the recently downloaded route. Did I do something worng?

I later used an online converter and converted the GPX file to a FIT file and put it into the Course folder and the Edge then found it. Do I have to do this every time, i.e. convert the GPX file to a FIT file for the Edge to find and use it? Or should I be putting the file into a different folder or do something else?

  • It is warm start not a cold start like switching it off is. It has the same affect in terms of processing the contents of the NewFiles folder.

  • Seems like a minor difference between it being warm or cold.

Larger computers do a POST when powering on (something that is avoided if it's a "warm" restart).

  • I use Bikemap to plan my routes for my Garmin 1030 and I've never had an issue finding my routes once I've downloaded the Bikemap gpx onto my Garmin. You should put all new courses into the New folder (Fit or GPX format). I did lose turn by turn a few months back after I upgraded to firmware version 8.0.0, but I've discovered that was due to a setting: Activity Profiles>ROAD>Navigation>Routing>Routing Mode = Mixed Surface Cycling. (was set to Road Cycling before I changed it and I think that's why I lost turn by turn).

Thanks Tourer and everyone else.I've been able to do as folks say, download GPX files from Bikemaps into the New Files folder and after restarting the 1030 they appear in Saved Courses.

  • Bikemap also has KML files. Would they be better?

I don't know of any bike computer that uses KML files.

  • To import a GPX you do not need to connect the Edge. On the Garmin Connect website, go to Courses. There is a Import link, click that and import the GPX file. You can then save it in your courses. Then use the Garmin Mobile app on your phone to transfer to the Edge. I much prefer that route to the USB transfer with a computer. If you stick to USB, as you were told the GPX file must be placed in the NewFile folder, not the Courses folder. At reboot the Edge will process the GPX and create the FIT file. But again I prefer the website import and wireless transfer way.

I have tried that before and it failed and tried it again just now and it failed again. From Garmin Connect's website, when I try to import a GPX file I always get the error message "An error occurred with your upload. Please try again."

  • That is indication the GPX is not compatible. I rarely get that. Might be easier to just plot the course.

  • when I try to import a GPX file I always get the error message

Would you mind attaching the file to this thread? Someone might be able to take a look at it and see what's wrong. If it is incompatible, there are tools to fix that.

No one seems to like GPX files. This page won't let me upload it either. It will upload .fit files though. But I've got loading GPX files into the Garmin New Files folder working so I don't need more methods, thanks.
