Edge Remote - Status of fix for connection issue

Garmin,

What is the status of the Edge Remote fix. Currently, the remote only works well when there is no connection to a phone.

The issue was first highlighted in Sept 2017 - https://forums.garmin.com/forum/into...16-edge-remote - but the fault was probably there from the beginning of 1030 production.

There has been very little information to address the issue from Garmin. The only responses on the forum were from Shawn-Garmin:

11-14-2017, 02:09 PM - Apologies for not reaching out to this thread sooner. We have reported the concerns you have mentioned here with the remote not staying connected and are researching the issue.

11-26-2017, 05:56 PM - There is an open ticket to investigate issues with the Edge remote not staying connected. Sorry for the frustration.

03-02-2018, 07:03 PM - We want to acknowledge to our Edge 1030 customers that we are actively working to address the issues being experienced when using the Edge Remote. We have narrowed down the problem as an issue with concurrent wireless transmissions impacting the communication between the Edge 1030 and the Edge Remote. The team is working on a solution to resolve the issue with the remote as well as not impact communication with other wireless components. We understand your frustrations. I will update this thread once the issue is resolved and have information about providing a SW update to our customers impacted by this issue.

04-06-2018, 10:15 PM - Thanks for reaching out Teriemer. We are still investigating the issue. We will get it sorted out. Once we have a fix, I will post it here.

04-13-2018, 05:31 PM - Thanks for the udpate. We are working on a solution and apologize for the delay.

04-24-2018, 07:02 PM - We are still investigating the remote issue. @das1e and lopoga I will reach out to you via PM and help get things sorted out for you.

05-01-2018, 09:14 PM - We have been able to tweak previous versions of the software and help improve the connectivity in some use cases. In other cases, we fell short due to our inability to reproduce the issue in house. However, this continued discussion and feedback have helped us in narrowing down the root cause and now requires us to work with our various suppliers to assist in developing a solution. If you could please post the following information to this thread, this will help further define our search for a viable solution.
1. Phone and OS version
2. what other devices are connected to and/or paired to the phone (including non-Garmin devices)
3. settings.fit file and activity files

05-22-2018, 11:37 PM - We are continuing to work on remote issues.

06-15-2018, 09:40 PM - I can say we are still investigating the issue and working towards a solution. Sorry for the delay in response here.

07-05-2018, 09:34 PM- I can confirm what Alan has stated above. We have recently had a few occasions where we were able to capture the issue in house. It has been very elusive to reproduce. We continue to work on a solution to the problem. I apologize it seems that we are not interested in the issue but we are indeed working on a fix.

09-20-2018, 04:47 PM - We do continue to work on getting this issue resolved. We do not feel like disconnecting the phone is an acceptable solution. Our full intent is to fix this issue. I apologize for the frustration.

It has been 1 year that Garmin have been working on getting the Edge Remote to work with the 1030. It would be greatly appreciated if we could have an update on what the current issues are and when we can expect the remote to work once again.

Please don't put the Edge Remote issue to the bottom of your to do list. It is an important feature for a lot of users.

  • Thanks for the clarification. I think that INTERMITTENT describes it well.
  • Alan,

Would it be possible for you to repeat your Edge Remote test with a newer iPhone or an Android phone. It would be interesting to see if you develop issues with these other phones.
  • I have my iPhone X since January 18 - before I had the same phone as Alan: iPhone 6s. It did not work either!
For me the question is more: how old is Alans remote? Did they change something in newer remotes?
  • I can borrow an Android and give it a re-test. I can get a short ride in today, but would need to wait for Thursday for a longer ride.

For clarification I have an older iPhone 6 not 6s.

I also thought about whether the Edge remote has changed over time, but as far as I can tell it has not.
  • So I had a chance to get a 90 minute test ride in.
Before I started I tried the remote while sitting at my desk and things did not look too promising. Then I noticed that the remote was giving a low battery warning so I replaced the battery before the road test.

    Set-up
    Di2 over ANT
    Vector 3 over ANT+ at 8 Hz
    Bike Speed sensor over ANT+
    HRM over ANT+
Paired to a Samsung Galaxy J7 Prime, Andriod 7.0 running GCM and Livetrack
    Radar ANT+

During the ride I had no issues with the remote. The Edge respond each time I used the remote.
  • Alan,

Thanks for doing the test. Will you still try another test on Thursday?

Something is really strange with this remote issue.....

Anyone else have any ideas for Alan to try?
  • I did a longer test today with the same set-up as before. This time 2 Hours and 45 minutes of riding, 3 hours elapsed. I got the same results as before, no issues. I added some navigation activities as well as some message exchange to some other Group livetrack users to see if that made any difference. It did not.

I also left the remote untouched for an hour and then pressed the next page button on the remote and the Edge responded first time.
  • Alan,

Thanks for taking the time to do the tests.

Do you have any thoughts as to why so many users are having issues?
  • Difficult to say as I cannot reproduce it using either an iPhone or an Android phone. The only additional things I can think of are possible variations in the remote, Edge units or the BT implementation on certain phones.

If you can reproduce this I would suggest a PM to Shawn@Garmin. Garmin may want you to send them your unit and remote or they may give you instructions/scripts to enable logging of the ANT and BT traffic for analysis.

I would add that before doing any additional testing make sure that the battery in the remote is good. Make sure to use a correctly sized screw driver when opening the remote otherwise you could could strip the screw heads.
  • I have tried really everything...
iPhone, Android phone, factory-resets more than once, even bought a second remote, correspndated with beta-team, send them detailed reports what‘s going on - to no avail.
All (not so much) collegues of mine with 1030 and remote suffers the same - not one for whom it works stable.
It is absolutely misterious to me that Alan‘s combi works flawlessly...

I gave up and use my Edge without phone-connection since remote is more important for me.
