1030 turns off during ride

Hello

I have had my 1030 for 3 months now, and manily used for indoor training, but now I have startet on outdoor training.
I have never had any problems with the 1030 before, but 2 days in a row, I have experienced that it suddently shuts down during a ride, I am not sure, but it could be in relation to some Strava segments starting.
I can start it again, and when it starts it asks if I want to save my ride, if I cancel, I can continue the ride in the same file.

Does anybody have suggestions on what to do?

I have the random shutdown problem. I have experienced it since I bought the device a number of months ago. It effectively renders it completely useless for any serious use. I can only rely on my old Edge 1000. The thread here suggests that Garmin know about the issue but have no interest in resolving. Clearly people have been sold a product that doesn't function as advertised. i have reported the problem through the support channel but have received absolutely no response. I think in general Garmin products are excellent. However the 1030 is the exception which tarnishes their reputation. I shall be starting to provide feedback to their sales channel to advise others not to buy this product.
  • Thanks for the feedback stevedawes28836 I'm sorry to hear you did not get a response through our support channels. Please send me a PM and I will find out what is going on with your email. We ae working on the issues and plan to have another update out shortly that resolves many of the issues reported. Please check out the 4.24 beta posted here that might resolve your issues.

I have a Garmin 810 that also used to crash mid-ride.
    So frustrating.
Eventually I got a replacement unit from Garmin that was better. I still use that one.
It does not crash as long as I
    • delete my rides regularly to keep it clean
    • do not use turn-by-turn navigation
So disappointed to see that you guys still have these problems even with such expensive units.
    Keeps me from upgrading.
Hope they can fix it for you.

I’ve had the same problem multiple times, even after updating to software version 5.0. It starts with the device flipping between “screen locked” and “screen unlocked”with increasing frequency and then shuts down entirely. Soft reset has no impact on the issue. Has any more progress been made on this? Not the first problem I’ve had with the device, and vowed during the ride today to replace it. I’d still like to see if there is a solution though, since the 1030 was so expensive. Very frustrating.

I am having the same problems with 1030 on rides. I had it for less than two months now and barely a week would pass that I do not have at least two-three shutdowns in one ride (I do ride four days a week). The previous 705, 810 and 1000 - never had these problems, not once! It's a shame to pay this much for something that has obviously not been thoroughly tested. Shame Garmin! Anyway, I called Garmin support yesterday (had to wait 1hour for them to call me back), but they sent me an email with a possible solution. I tried it last night, rode this morning and it did not happen again - so it maybe something you want to consider doing. Just a warning - make sure all your rides are sync'd with Garmin Connect - as you will loose all your rides recorded to this device.
    On a Windows based PC:
    • Plug device into computer
    • Click Start menu
    • Click on (My) Computer
    • Double-click Garmin device drive
    • Double-click Garmin folder
    • Right-click the Activities folder -(this folder contains all your rides - so make sure you save them or have them uploaded to Garmin Connect , or wherever!)
    • Select Delete
    • Confirm selected file to be deleted
    • *Right-click the Applications folder -(my device have only "Apps" folder. According to Garmin "Applications" = "Apps")
    • Select Delete
    • Confirm selected file to be deleted
    • Right-click the NewFiles folder
    • Select Delete
    • Confirm selected file to be deleted
    • Unplug device from computer

    On a Mac:
    • Plug device into computer
    • Click on Finder
    • Click on Garmin device drive
    • Click Garmin folder
    • Right click Activities folder
    • Select Move to Trash
    • *Right click Apps folder
    • Select Move to Trash
    • Right click NewFiles folder
    • Select Move to Trash
    • Empty Trash
    • Eject device from computer
    • Unplug device from computer

Your mass storage device will no longer display the data you have deleted. Install software update using Garmin Express.

As I said - you may want to try this. I will report my findings by the end of this week after I would have done a couple of hundred miles after deleting these folders.
*Update: Garmin has confirmed "Applications" = "Apps" - I hate it when people are not specific, or cannot spell. So they wants me to remove the "Apps" folder top and I will do that this afternoon, before my ride tomorrow. I did not had any problems with the 1030 yesterday after only removing the "Activities" folder.
    Will report back.
Update 2: I removed the Apps folder last night and for the first time since the last software update, I did not had any random shutdowns during my ride.
I think this is it guys! I would love to hear from others that tried deleting these folders, if they still have shutdowns - that is now if there is anyone left on this forum that still uses the 1030 - as of now it looks like a lot of customers is jumping the Gamin ship!

bert269 - have you had any further issues with shutdowns after you deleted these folders? I am having all kinds of shutdown problems with my brand new 1030 with current software and I am hoping for a fix so I don't have to mess with returning it etc. What is your current status with the device working/not working? Thanks!

Well before I done the latest garmin beta update the device was stable and actually worked OK recording rides but tonight I noticed it shut itself done four times. Totally unbelievable as we seem to take one step forward and three back. Great ride as well pity a £500 piece of junk cannot even record a ride without problems. Ruined my ride as was constantly looking at garmin and having to stop and power it on!!
