Forerunner 970 touch screen issues

My 970 seems to have touch screen input when nothing is touching it. It seems like it is overly sensitive. If I scroll up to view running details, and scroll thru the items there, it gets stuck constantly opening the selected item, and sometimes the screen is slightly scrolling back and forth on its own (screen is shaking).

I notice this when looking at the acute load and load focus screens. It is very repeatable. I'll hit the back button to get out, and it will jump right back into the screen, over and over again. My fingers are nowhere near the center of the screen to possibly touch the screen link. I have to hit the back button quickly, multiple times, to get to the watch face to get it to stop.

Is this a hardware bug? software bug? I didn't have this problem on the Fenix 7s.

  • Just received my 970 today and got this exact problem, returned it and ordered a new one. Ive noticed it thinks I'm touching top right corner meaning it will constantly press on recovery time in default watch face as it kept popping up. Couldn't even turn off display as it thought something was touching it. My best guess is it's a sensory issue as AOD did not work as others mentioned. The touchscreen is just too sensitive possibly? Has to be a hardware issue given how few people experience this?

  • I received my Forerunner 970 yesterday and I'm also experiencing the "ghost touches" issue.

The device is running software version 6.17. I’ve already performed a factory reset and reinstalled the software twice, but the problem persists.

Given the steps I’ve taken, I believe this is likely a hardware-related issue.

The Always-On Display is turned off, and the only temporary workaround I found was to disable the touch functionality entirely.

I must say I’m frustrated with the experience of purchasing Garmin’s latest top-of-the-line, most expensive watch at launch — only to receive a unit with a defect.

I’d appreciate any guidance from the Garmin team or information on whether a fix is being considered.

  • Good morning,

I own a FR970 since May 20th and so far I noticed the ghost touch issue a few times.

It was severe, as described in this thread, only in two occasions. All the other times it looked more like a single or a couple of unintended touches.

The issue is unpredictable and not repeatable.

Do you recommend contacting the support or waiting for the next software update?

  • I’ve had mine two weeks and there’s been a couple odd things that happened. Not sure if it’s me or the watch. Any “ghost” touches that I’ve noticed have been after a shower. I wear it on the inside of my wrist and I think between the water and possibly bumping it, that may be what is causing it go to random screens. Twice though an alarm went off at 5:30am for an alarm that I didn’t set. However, both were on the morning after evening showers—I didn’t look at the watch after the shower—just took it off. I’m assuming both times it went to the alarm screen which seems to start off with 5:30 as the starting point for setting an alarm.  I haven’t swam with it yet so hopefully that won’t be a problem.
