Data Field showing in IQ app but not on watch

  1. I have a new Forerunner 965 and am trying to get the Unit Converter data field installed to it.  The Garmin IQ app is showing it as installed however when I go to add it to my run activity it is not there.  Other data fields I have installed are there.  Can’t seem to find an answer to this one.
  • P.S.  Beware though, now that I've uninstalled Stryd Zones I am unable to re-install it.  It's showing as "installed" however when I try to add it to an activity it only shows up as a generic "Field 1" in the activity list.

  • Wow, interesting! Can you share how did you come up with that (which datafield is causing the problem)?

Though it's still a big in the watch itself I guess

  • It's the "Stryd Zones" CIQ DF that is causing the issue for me.

  • I got that, but I don't own a Stryd so I font have that installed but I'd like to know how can I determine which one is causing problems for me?

Though I'm sceptical about this approach. No datafield should be able to cause anything outside itself *, it shouldn't crash other datafields, it shouldn't cause the system not displaying the other datafields, etc... I would even argue that even in your case it's pretty obvious that the problem wasn't the stryd field, because you can't even see it now when you try to reinstall it, which shows that the real problem is in the Garmin OS. Of course if you believe in Santa and Garmin, you can continue this way, and soon enough you'll end up being in the ideal state (as far as Garmin customer support goes) which is that you deleted all of your CIQ apps. This would seemingly fix the problem, 'cause there wouldn't be any installed to be displayed...

*) unfortunately even when every datafield is perfect the design of the datafields / fit contributors is bad itself, and any (random) datafield that records anything to fit can crash any other (random) datafield that also tries to record to fit. In fact the stryd field is one that is known to be problematic in this regard, because it uses up all (or almost all) of the available fit slots and data size, not letting any other datafield to create a fit record, and from there it's just a matter of the order you added the 2 datafields to your activity layout (+maybe random luck) that crashes one of the 2 CIQ fields. But all this seems to have nothing to do with the original problem in this tread, it just causes Stryd datafield to be high on the radar of the Garmin agents...

  • Yes of course you're right - it's not the stryd zones datafield, it's how my Garmin INTERACTS with the Stryd Zones datafield.  some kind of hang up there.

Garmin has NEVER "played nice" with Stryd (it's a competing power meter) and has gone to grant lengths to make the world difficult for Stryd integration, so maybe I am being a cynic but it sure seems like the issue is Garmin with Stryd itself.

  • FWIW - I have constant issues with my 965 with ANY CIQ datafield on a regular basis.  About 20% of the time for any activity - be it Hike, or Cycling, or Running - the CIQ DF will "bomb out" and display an error message.  It literally just happened to me on my mid-day walk.

So yes, it's garmin - but it's also something "me" too - as if everyone's experience was this way then they wouldn't continue to sell watches.  So the question is, what am I doing to stress the OS?  is my usage too "extreme?"

  • Strange. I also have fr965, and besides the "can't see any of the ciq fields besides the 2 that is added to the layout" I don't experience any problems. If you want to try something, then install my Hiker datafield:  apps.garmin.com/.../4debed0e-4266-495e-8215-a3a8755ee87a and if that IQ! crash happens, then sync with Garmin Connect and let me know here or in Connect IQ in Contact Developer and I'll have a look at the crash, maybe it'll give some information. Though I guess it will be one of those errors that we don't know much about and only Garmin can fix.

  • Ha ha ha - What a coincidence!  it was your Hiker field that just literally crashed on my walk just now!

    I knew I recognized your username.  :-)

  • Wait nevermind - it's this one I have, which looks identical that's why i was confused:

  • Ok, I just copied Walker to Hiker, and am developing new features, that will be released in the coming week. Currently it's not much different. But I know what your problem is :) I fixed it (that was the reason I made Hiker, because he didn't respond to the crashes for a week) so you can either download Hiker instead of Walker, or you can check it in Connect IQ, there should be an update to Walker as well (I sent him the fix) If that's not the case then you found a new bug :)
