Horseback riding

Dear Garmin,

Please add Horseback riding activity to the FR965 (and perhaps other Forerunner series watches). I don't think that equestrian sports are that niche. I know that Fenix and Epix already have equestrian sports installed, but in my opinion the Forerunner (965 at least) series watches are way better for horseback riding due to their lighter weight and smaller size.

Thank you in advance :)

Tip to all equestrians: I'm using a workaround, find an Activity that provides the best watchface for you, personaly I find (gravel)bike riding one quite good, record your activity and then in Connect app change its type to the Horseback riding.

  • That's the first I've heard of it. Personally, I've never encountered such behavior.

  • Personally, I didn't try this particular app, it must be pretty new or I just missed it somehow. Anyway, I'll try it out. Also, I have to agree with '2681070', regarding excessive battery drain (with some non-garmin apps) as well as crashing (which I encountered several times immediately after installing this app) and poor customability (didn't find ability to add maps, I do trail riding sometimes...). I did try several apps "Horse Riding Tracker", " F3b OutdoorSorts+", "Outdoor App Professional" and such, but all of them have at least one of these problems, as well as a fixed non-customizable watch face. One more thing some apps count horse steps as your own, without an ability to turn off this feature.

  • Perhaps the first thing you did to your new watch was installing various apps? I suggest you try using your watch without third-party apps installed, at least for a few weeks, maybe it will improve your battery life.

Or I was just unlucky with some apps.

  • One thing I just noticed, it's your app! Thank you for taking this into your own hands and listening what community says, there is still much to be done, but it's a great start, good job!

Edit: I'll try using this with Polar strap for horses, it's interesting how it will interpret the data after riding.

  • IMHO steps are counted by the watch as long as you wear it. Regardless of whether you started an activity/app or just walk around. Am I missing something? So the last issue you should IMHO send to Garmin, so somehow they recognize it's not human steps and shouldn't count. Though obviously it would probably be much easier for them to add the horseback riding activity as they did to other watches...

  • In my understanding, certain activities such as "Bike" (or "Horseback riding" in Fenix watches) simply disable step counting, or simply don't take them into account resulting in a logical total daily steps count. I don't believe that there are some "smart" human walking recognition features.

And yes, I agree with you, it would be much easier for them to add this activity as they did to other watches Grinning

  • My previous watch, a forerunner 935, counted stairs like crazy while riding my bike (in the Netherlands, which is considered pretty flat).
Don’t know how my 965 behaves for stairs and steps during bike rides. I don’t look at stairs of steps. I don’t find that interesting.

  • Deffinitely there are "smart" steps counting features. I don't know how much it is a hardware or software issue, but for example my smaller kids have Vivosmart 4 and if they want they can just move their arms while watching TV or even when they take a bus to the school it counts lots of steps, while more advanced watches, like fr245, fr965 are not that easy to trick.

  • Well yes, you are totally right about that.

What I meant to say was that in my understanding doing certain activities it purposefully disables step counting. I wasn't talking about regular wearing. Sorry for misunderstanding.

Also I have no issues with step counting while using Garmin activities or wearing watch in general. I only mentioned that some Third-party apps do count steps while doing activities where steps shouldn't be recorded. :)

Edit: for this reason I use Gravelbike riding Activity as a workaround for horseback riding (as written in this thread's first post)  :)

  • I’ve tested the app which has been developed by

And to be honest it’s quite good , when the activity is activated the steps counter is disabled, the only thing remaining is that if the users was able to toggle on / off the GPS tracking for indoor riding sessions just to save the battery when the gps can’t be used , however the app solve the issue for the forerunner owners

    Once again thank you,
