Wrist gesture doesn't work in 18.22 if watch worn over a sleeve

Just letting people know that the following bug reported in late January hasn't yet been fixed in the just published 18.22, and it's bound to affect a lot of winter sports enthusiasts:

https://forums.garmin.com/beta-program/forerunner-965/forerunner-965---public-beta-bug-reports/i/public-beta-version-18-xx/wake-on-gesture-goes-dead-if-watch-is-worn-on-top-of-sleeve

If you wear your watch over the sleeve while doing an activity (and use a HRM strap to record your HR), wrist gestures to wake up the screen don't work.

As a temporary workaround you can disable wrist HR while doing the activity. Let's hope Garmin fixes this soon in another update, the bug/regression has been acknowledged and a ticket has been created (, it would be nice to hear if there's any update on this).

(BTW, this seems to be a good example of how fixing something may break something else. People have been complaining on these forums that when you stop your activity while wearing a HR strap, it takes a moment for the wrist HR to lock onto your HR again and give correct results. Now Garmin has improved this by keeping the wrist HR on while wearing a HR strap. But that has caused the watch to think it's not being worn when it doesn't detect optical HR while worn over the sleeve...)

  • Not only over a sleeve. Looks like just using HR strap is the cause. Yesterday I have watch on hand (skin) and HR strap during cycling, gesture also didn't work. Please fix it fast, it's very annoying and uncomfortable.

  • I am unable to replicate the issue you are reporting. I have completed several activities using an HR strap and glances work as expected.

  • Same my side, gesture works on sleeve OK with HR Strap on.

  • Did you also start an activity and wait for a short while? At least for me, it took a minute or two for the watch to decide it's not worn (when wearing on sleeve and having started an activity with HR strap).

  • Normally have the watch on the sleeve and HRM attached  before I go outside and select and  start the activity.

  • Hmmm, I did exactly the same yesterday, and wrist gestures didn't work until I went to the settings and disabled wrist HR. Strange...

  • I think it's depending if you start the activity before or after the watch has given up finding the wrist pulse... If you dress and head out quick while watch still has the made up pulse numbers it works, but not if you take it easy and wait a while.

Edit: and also depends on how many layers and type of garment used in the sleeves

  • I was also think about the latter (layers etc) , I generally have one layer which may be a long T-short type or at maximum sort of like a sweater in thickness (like a tracksuit sleeve) .

I'll be more diligent next time i need to use a sleeve and see the exact sequences.

  • Just to put my hand up as another one suffering from this issue.  A bit annoying not being able to do things like see how far you've gone, or you know, tell the time and stuff with your watch, when out for a run.  Sleeve + HRM chest strap pretty mandatory with how cold it is here atm

  • Worked perfectly fine before 18.22. Updated yesterday and did a run today morning, it doesn’t work anymore… that’s really frustrating…
