Gesture detection not working when wearing watch over clothes

Hello,

I previously owned a Fenix 6 which firmware I was thinking having a bug since backlight didn't turn on using gesture during my winter night workouts...

Just bought a fr965 and I was thinking this morning that the new watch has same bug. (which is way more annoying since amoled display is "normaly" totally off)...

....before I understood that gesture control only work when the watch detects heart-rate using the built-in sensor....

... but during cold session I use an external heat-rate sensor and put the watch over my warm clothes.... Too bad :-(

Is there a workaround for enabling gesture detection over clothes ?

If not, if you read these lines, people at Garmin, please either add an option to allow gesture detection without heart-rate detection during activities.... Or just allow gesture detection when an external heart-rate sensor is connected. I think people having activities during cold nights like me will really appreciate !

Thanks,

Cédric

  • Hello,

Since yesterday I am not able to reproduce the bug anymore !

This morning, I had a night run with the configuration I describled before (Fr965 (AOD off, Livetrack on) + Stryd + Polar OH1). I put my watch over my rain jacket and did not disable wirst HR sensor.... Everything was working like a charm, gesture were perfectly detected during the whole session.

Here are the difference between this session and the one I had saturday :

    • Saturday was a Trail activity, today was a "basic" Run activity.... But I tried starting a Trail activity and gesture was also working
    • Saturday was with navigation, today not... I will try this configuration again next time I go for a run

    Have a nice day !

  • I'll see this week-end if I can extract such file from Garmn connect out of runs I previously had with my Fenix 6 .

I just tested FitFileRepairTool on my latest run when everything was ok. It shows both my OH1 and my Stryd connected  using ANT+ and also 5 local devices :

    • ANTFS version 3.58, manfuacturer Garmin
    • <no type> version 2.42 manufacturer Garmin
    • "Type ID 3 " without any additionnal information
    • "Type ID 8 " without any additionnal information
    • Environnement sensor, version 23.1 manufacturer Garmin

  • Thanks OnlyTwo for these explanations.

So I explored my Garmin connect in order to donwload previous run I had with my Fenix 6 with temperature arround 0° (at such a temperature I'm sure I was wearing my winter jacket with my watch above its sleeve).

In every file I explored, the only and constant source for HR is the OH1, the watch did not swtich to wirst.... The bug probably have its origin elsewhere.

Also, I did new tests with the Forerunner 965 :

    • use navigation
    • also connect my bluetooth headset (I forget to mention it previously)

The bug did not appear.... I am no more able to reproduce it ! This is somehow good news but this does not help to captur it Joy

As a result, I think we should stop investigations. If the bug re-appear, I'll record a fit file in order to explore the records folowing your explanations.

Thanks a lot for your help !
