Garmin 955 - How to delete downloaded but not yet installed update 21.20

Hello to everyone!

I have a garmin 955 and although I have disabled the auto update function, it was still able to download the firmware when I connected it to my PC via USB. Now the update is downloaded in my watch but not yet installed and ti says that "it will be auto installed when I will not be wearing the watch or when the watch will be inactive".

As I do not wish to install it, is there a way to delete the update file somehow from my watch to prevent it from being installed? I'm pretty much happy with my current version 19.18...

Thank you all!

  • - Close Garmin Express. (Make sure it's fully closed - i.e. the tray icon shouldn't be present)

    - Plug your watch into your PC (if the watch prompts you to go into MTP mode, answer yes)

    - Your watch should show up as a pseudo-drive in File Explorer ("Forerunner 955"). Navigate to the \GARMIN\RemoteSW\ folder

    - Copy all the files in RemoteSW\ to your PC's system drive (if you want)

    - Delete all files in RemoteSW\

Alternatively, you could try to be strategic and only delete any files with an extension of GCD that are a few megabytes in size (which have the date that you expect to see). It probably wouldn't hurt to delete everything, but copying all the files to your PC first would allow you to undo the deletion if you want/need to, for any reason.

(For anyone who needs to do this on Mac, you need 3rd party software like OpenMTP to explore your device's files and folders)

  • Thank you very much it worked!

  • Hi

This procedure des not working for me. I only had a gmaptz.img file in the RemoteSW folder. After delete it a message "it will be auto installed when I will not be wearing the watch or when the watch will be inactive" was visible after disconnecting the cable. I postponed the update, but the SW update files are still present somewhere in the watch flash mem.

    EDIT: see below

  • Hi. At my Forerunner the gupdate.gsp is directly in the Garmin folder. Garmin Express saves the file there. If I'm deleting this file, the update will not be installed.

  • Just deleting gupdate.gsp didn't help. Only simultaneous deletion of gupdate.gsp from the main folder and gmaptz.img from the remoteSW folder worked as expected.

Thanks for all the advice. Garmin users are more helpful than the manufacturer. You helped me protect from installing SW 21.x which breaks the LT and VO2max evaluation algorithms, which is a key functionality of this sports watch.

  • The gmaptz.img file could well be an update of your maps. It gives a similar notification as when an update of the device software is ready to be installed. In my experience, only deleting the gupdate.gsp file is enough to preventie a software update.

  • Yes, the name of gmaptz.img suggests that it might be a map update. However, the notification suggests otherwise, so to be sure, with these contradictory clues, I deleted both files and the notification disappeared. I don't want to risk accidentally updating to an unwanted SW version Smiley

  • gmaptz is only an update to the Time Zones file that resides in the root of your device. Whenever a country around the world decides to redraw their area borders, affecting how those areas then fall within the 24 World regions, or when a country changes the rules for Daylight Saving Time, then that file gets updated. Unless you travel extensively, it is fine to stay with older versions.

Edit: 'root of device' meaning in the "Garmin" directory, where the large map files are placed amongst a few information files etc.
