Bug report - Walk activity issue - 42949.7 distance alert spam

Hello,

I am experiencing a weird bug somehow related to distance alerts after starting Walk activity.

Steps to reproduce:

1. Create a custom run workout and send it to watch (i.e. my was Run Repeat 35x, Distance 285m)

2. Start a Run activity with that workout, Alerts off, AutoLap off, so only interval alerts after each 285m will be triggered.

3. Finish the run - I did all 35 repeats and continued for couple of seconds - so I exceeded my custom run workout.

No issues so far

4. Start a Walk activity, Alerts off, AutoLap 1km

5. After starting, the watch just vibrates and spams 42949.7 distance alert like crazy, disappears after stopping activity, reappears after resuming.

The issue is not happening when starting a Run or Bike activity instead of Walk.

The soft reset after the run didnt help at all.

Looks like there is a simple workaround though - add new distance Alert into Walk activity and remove it and then start it.

Software version: 20.29

  • A few people have reported this bug (and similar phantom alert bugs) in other forums (like 265 and 965) but I think you’re the first person to come up with a reproduction procedure and a viable workaround that doesn’t involve resetting the watch to factory defaults (although I’m sure resetting the activity profile settings would work, too).

Are you on the beta program? If so, you might want to report this in the beta forum for the next beta, if it’s still happening to you.

  • No, I dont have interest to join the beta program.
I just tried to replicate it and didnt get these alerts anymore so I slightly edited the step 3 - you need to finish the run and exceed your custom workout - at least this is what I have done in the morning which may started causing the issue.

  • Happened to me today on FR265

Do you run with stryd ?

Was running a Stryd imported workout when I first noticed my Connect IQ data screen (stryd zones data field) had suddenly gone out of service around the first kilometer of running, only showing a black screen with CIQ logo in the middle.

Ended the run activity to start over and that's when the 42949.7 distance bug started behaving, even watch restart didn't fix, (but went swimming afterwards with no pb)

Phone alert spoke relentlessly for 5 minutes

Was running with stryd and an H10 chest strap (both connected via ANT+)

Installed apps: Connect IQ + Pomodoro

Installed data fields: Stryd zones + Fellrnr's Hrpwr + Surf Tracker 3

Only stryd zones is set on my run profile

Fixed the pb later by creating an alert and disabling it, as advised by OP

    Hope this can help

    Peter

  • Just my two cents, but I don't think the Stryd Zones data field (or any CIQ field) can cause this issue, but I think it's possible this issue could cause a CIQ field to crash, if part of the issue is that a programmed workout becomes corrupt (or appears to be corrupt to the watch's software)

In your case it might be possible that there's something the watch doesn't like about the Stryd workout, but that would still likely be an issue with the watch (imo) and not Stryd.

You might want to report this to [email protected] or [https://support.garmin.com/en-CA/] since it's an issue others are having (and most can't recreate it or get rid of it with a nondestructive workaround.)

Others have been able to get rid of the problem by resetting their activity settings to defaults tho.

    is this a known issue?

  • No, my run was just the watch and bluetooth headphones.

  • I thought this forum is a place to report bugs also.

  • I thought this forum is a place to report bugs also.

I mean, that's often what happens, but it's not guaranteed that Garmin will notice any bugs that we report here :/. It's primarily a user-to-user forum. Notice that Garmin employees usually only chime in on the 4-alarm fire threads, like the 0 elevation bug on this gen of devices or the cold water shutdown issue on Fenix 8.

I wish there were official bug report subforums for non-beta firmware.

  • I vote for this idea, and a real knwoledge base to document and follow open caveats and workaround when known.

  • I also think the Garmin Ideas page (a one-way black hole) should be replaced with a community sub-forum where ideas (feature requests) can be voted on and discussed, similar to what Spotify and other brands have. I actually submitted this idea but ofc I have no idea if anyone read it.

Ironically all of the bug reports subforums here are actually "Ideas" forums (as you can see from some of the wording in the UI), so we have forums designed for ideas being used to submit bugs (but not all bugs), but no forums for actual ideas.
