19.18 - Solar edition - Battery life

This week I had to reset my watch to factory defaults because a few of bugs.

First of all, I'm always a long way from reaching Garmin's battery life limit.

As a good case, I had a trail running race 9h30 between 1600 and 3000 of altitude under 100% sun.

Activity mode with All Systems mode and wrist-based heart rate ==> Up to 34 hr. with solar from Garmin website.

The result is 50% depleted after 9h30!

Activated a course to get ClimbPro, this is the only screen in my race.

There is a gap between 19 and 34 hours!

  • Were you using any external sensors?

Solar probably made less than 1% of a positive contribution to battery life.

As has been discussed here before the lux-hours information is entertaining in the way a toy is entertaining, but in terms of knowing whether by being out in the sun how much the discharge of the battery has been reduced it is meaningless.

  • Were you using any external sensors?

    No

  • Ciao,

I would give the Suunto Vertical Solar a thought for the battery life and aesthetics of the watch if it weren't for the fact that I would lose electronic payments and some smart functions

  • Salut,

  • I think you might want to turn more watch features off.  I did a 100 miler with my 955 Solar and it lasted to a 22 hour finish with around 30% battery remaining.  That was with almost zero solar since there was a strong weather system blowing through.

    Settings:

    • Bluetooth - off
    • Wi-fi - off
    • Navigation - off
    • Climbpro etc.- off
    • touch screen - off
    • Gesture - off
    • Back light timeout - 4 seconds w/20% brightness
    • data recording - smart
    • Satellites - GPS only
    • Heartrate - on
    • Alerts on (food reminders)
  • After a year use, I'll say the garmin manual estimates are accurate for me.
#1. I have o2 monitoring on for the night, so overnight drop is always 3%.
#2. Day time drop is 2-4%, depending on interactions with the watch (e.g. paying with watch) and watch face changes (e.g. receiving message etc). The drop can be as low as 1% if I spent many hours outdoor.
#3. Jogging with ALL + multiband settings, about 5%/hour, or 1% drop per 12 min. Can be slightly lower if its very sunny.

So at least 2 metric is correct for me, (1) up to 20 days on smartwatch mode and (2) activity with ALL + multiband + wrist heart rate up to 22 hours. I only charge once every Sunday evening to about 85% and end with about 30+% before the next charge. That's good for 2x ~1hr jog and 1x 30min swim for a typical week. When I go on holidays overseas (up to 12 days) where I rarely able to jog, I don't even need to charge my watch at all and still come back with lots of battery juice to spare

  • I will have to try without importing a GPX file and see if I can reach 31-34 hours as stated on their website.
