A general conversation about the future of MIP for our watches..

Just got the 955 Solar.  Love it.  That said, I see Garmin has made great strides in the AMOLED offerings.  I would love to get ahold of their K1 annual reporting to see how they are affecting sales from a financial standpoint, but I am sure it's great for Garmin as many just want the pretty look on the screen (totally get that).   Personally, I was tempted by the Epix myself but living in Maimi, FL where I have bright, non-stop sun every day the MIP display is just amazing.  I love that it "feels" more like a regular watch vs a typical "smart watch" in that sense.

Anyway, the question I have (which I know none of you can answer, lol) is do we think that Garmin will continue to offer MIP's in the future?  I saw one post on Reddit where someone thought that maybe phasing them out.  That would make me sad (and others I am sure).  But, I can't help but see a pattern in their product offerings that appear to support both types moving forward.:

The base, you have the 45 / 55 (which I am sure may be consolidated to just the 55 in the future).  This of course is MIP screen.

Then, I feel like the 245 will stop and the 255 is really that replacement (also MIP).   The 265 is the dedicated AMOLED version.

Same with the 955 / 955 Solar.  MIP, but the 965 AMOLED version.

Then with the Fenix.  You now have all MIP and all solar.    The AMOLED version would of course be the Epix line.

In fact, the only real place where I don't see an option anymore is on the Marq line.  Now all AMOLED.  Also the other lines like the Venue etc (II dont even pay attention to them, not my style) seem to be going all AMOLED.

What are your thoughts?  Again, this is not a knock against the AMOLED watches.  I am sure they are great, just truly wondering how Garmin will move forward.

  • and at the moment I am waiting for my IRIS ring

They have already changed the name before the first delivery is even made.
Her name is now "Velia". But there are some (jewelry) rings with the same name.
On the other hand, it is an interesting ring, but with a battery life of only ~ 3 days.

  • I do runs and swim.

4 runs a week over 1h each with multi satellite, 2 swims a week about 50min each.

I have backlight always on and battery lasts at least 5 days

  • Yeah, I'm starting to think I have been scammed...

  • Well, well. Wanted to switch my diving computer to one ecosystem... my plan was not buy a new daily driver, but but..

So, let's daily drive this for a while and let's see what the feelings are then, but the initial impressions is wow that map looks good versus MIP.
Then will I be annoyed about the side glancing can't be done (as don't want to put always on display on). Winter holiday trip also coming in two weeks, so will get good experience from darkness and sunny. Will report back maybe after a month what are the experiences.

  • Yes, in maps amoled really makes a difference. Another surprise is that based on the maps you are also from Finland. Wink

  • Well, I knew you were, but I have not tried to hide the fact I'm too :D Maybe not giving that up before in this thread, but I think there's posts where I have had activities shared that would give me up. Mutta joo, torille vaan, Espoontori ei oo kaukana ja tää nimimerkki on ihan vaan nimikirjiamet.

  • 100% agreed. MIP all day long!

  • So have been now daily driving this and well..

    - Display and maps are great looking.
    - Side glancing the time has not been a thing that would annoy me that it isn't possible.
    - Display gets off so fast and it's still somewhat annoying to wake up
    - If you tap the watch to wake up the display when in map screen, the map it very often thinks you want to save location and then you need to press back buttons to get back to normal navigation. STUPID STUPID. Does anyone know can one just get rid of that? I would never want to save location via the map screen? Who ever designed that functionality could go behind sauna..

Otherwise like other things not related to screen:
    - This uploads DUPLICATE activities to Garmin Connect, oh c'mon, wtf?! No, they are not from HRM. Should probably contact Garmin Support, but urf. How can't they get basic things right. It's somehow related that when phone syncs the activity and phone doesn't have internet this happens then when the phone has internet and longer activities have more probability to cause it, but that's what I've managed figure out.
    - 1 out of 3 times using download HR from HRM has worked as it should, 1 corrupted .fit, 1 download just took ages. And like this .fit corruption is some random Garmin thing and they have not fixed it in the watches, not in the backend when you upload, it is just your problem.

So probably still will continue to daily drive it, but not loving all aspects of it. Display wise, it could be better<tm>, but probably like still the display quality is so much better than it beats MIP and all hail to the AMOLED overlords!

  • On duplicate activities: This is a stab in the dark, but do you have automatic wi-fi upload turned on in the watch? I was thinking that maybe the watch first syncs with the phone, then both sync through wi-fi when it becomes available?

Yeah, speaking from experience, people don't test edge cases or bother to try to "break" their code. Everyone usually tests the happy path and calls it a day. (To be fair, ppl are rarely given the time to do proper testing).

It goes back to how a company has to care about quality to avoid certain kinds of bugs, and Garmin gives the impression that they don't care.

I would probably report it, otherwise it may never get fixed.

Sounds like it looks better, but it's less functional. I def get the maps use case tho. But as a runner I like being able to glance at the screen during a hard workout without waiting for the watch to go to full brightness. Other ppl may not even look at their watch during a workout (and indeed, it's usually discouraged.)

I think it would be great If Garmin adopted that Polar AMOLED trick where the display stays readable for the whole entire activity (by constantly flipping between normal brightness and super bright).
