965 vs 955? Advice Wanted

I'm trying to decide between the Forerunner 955 and 965. I've watched all the videos and the only differences seem to be a slightly larger display, longer battery life, and their new operating system. I've also seen a good amount of people complaining about the 955 not receiving necessary updates.

I am also worried that the beveled screen on the 965 may be more prone to damage as I will be using this watch for mountain biking and motocross.

If anyone has any advice, please feel free to educate me. The $100 difference is not a deal breaker.

  • Just bought myself a 265.

Planning to sell away my 955.

I don't need the maps and golf.

  • Makes good sense. I need maps else I would have gone with 255 or 265.

  • That's the first I'm hearing of the data being inaccurate. Are you saying the hrv, GPS tracking, training readiness, etc. is all inaccurate?

Hard to believe only the date and time is working correctly.

  • For your use case of mountain biking and motocross I would do the 955. It’s (physically) solid as a rock. I have zero fears wearing it through MTB races (recording all sensors and having amazing GPS), and take it exploring on hikes on MTB rides with it’s built-in maps. I don’t think the decreased battery life and likely decrease in durability of the pretty screen on the 965 is worth it unless that’s something you really value.

I love my 955 and don’t really have any issues with it (small bugs here and there but I worse than the Apple Watch I had, truly), but if I were doing it again I’d probably splurge and get the Fenix. But the 955 is a really good value.

  • Those don't work as advertised. It does displays data, but you soon find that it doesn't reliably match the reality.

    • Randomly stops recording an activity, timer still on (new one...)
    • sleep
    • pool data
    • lactate thresold
    • Heart rate zones
    • stairs count
    • map navigation in some screens
    • go to point in map
    • bodybatery works on the upper end, but losses any meaning for long exercises (trails, hiking and such)
    • Stress is getting worse
    • HRV
    • connectivity can get very frustrating away from internet connection (trail)
    • VO2max is very average
    • A lot of graphics can not be zoomed, so on long runs or trails you get no detail (elevation profile)
    • Weather
    • and more

GPS works for me, very well actually. No complains here. The issue is to use the maps to effectively navigate and get the data you need. It has improved a great deal with the updates, but a year on, it still not as useful as I expected (tried a fenix 7 first, and it was much better for navigation, but too bulky for my taste)

If you doubt any of this, just read the forum. Most people hang in here in the hopes to read the next update will fix their problem. Not much talk of how awesome is it, or tricks for this or that.

I've stop wearing it all the time, or looking at dynamics. Is OK to track long open water swims, or short trails, but definitely not the beast of a watch to assist you in your training it's advertised to be. A real shame as it has the right build and battery, but is let down by the software big time....

  • Every feature has worked for me as advertised actually. I follow this forum and do not understand the issues people are having. The only quirks I’ve run into are: it crashed once saving a ride in 100 degree weather, but it recovered and correctly saved the ride and all data, there’s a missing icon issue for 3rdparty saved activities, and…that’s it. I’ve used the maps while hiking and mountain biking, worked better than I even expected. I’ve recorded hundreds of activities across mountain biking, cyclocross, e-biking, hiking, yoga, walks and runs. I check my morning report every day and all the stats are correct and line up with what I expect and am feeling, including sleep, heart rate, HRV, stress, etc. I also use the race calendar and have tried several suggested workouts (though I’m no longer a runner, and look forward to the upcoming bike workouts); and it’s always synced fine for me too. The people sharing the most on this forum are a small minority that somehow have a lot of bugs or find things aren’t working as they expect. But I’ve really found it solid and great.

  • Extra features? What extra features? There are none. Currently the latest Fenix has less features than the budget FR 265.

  • Based on my usage of both

Very little difference on software point of view , esp. with the latest Beta for 955.

955 bit bulkier , MIP display better for outdoors , screen is more protected for sure

955 also has access to more IQ data , watch faces etc available

I agree on comments in this forum on longevity of AMOLED , its untested

965 dimensions are more comfortable to my wrist for sure , slightly thinner makes a difference for me.

You can likely get a 955 for $200 less than 965 if you can access a discount code

Also could try the 255 / 265 if you dont need mapping

  • A bit off topic: How works for you the Beta on 955 vs 14.20? worth it entry to the Beta or too much bugs? Thank you!

  • Hi I’m using a 965 at the moment
