Touchscreen becomes unresponsive after few days

Since my 955 has been updated to FW 12.27 I started to notice that after some time (usually around 2 weeks), touch becomes unresponsive. When it happens, it is not possible to select any widget glance by tapping on it and also scrolling becomes more laggy.

Button-based navigation within the UI remains working even after touch-based is broken.
Restart of the watch fixes the issue for next few days.
Before 12.27 I haven't experienced this issue.

Has anyone else noticed this?

  • I have touch disabled during activities. And as I wrote, my display only occasionally slows down. Nothing serious.

  • Actually I have never enabled touch during activities, it has been always off. I want to have touch enabled only for regular use in "smartwatch" mode and disabled during activities to prevent the accidental touches.

  • A me lo faceva solo quando NON era al polso, per esempio poggiato sul tavolo. Siccome lo uso sulla staffa per la bici l'ho dato indietro e ho preso un 255.

  • With latest firmware the situation are better but sometimes it's happened.... the problem It's disappeared since i organized the widgets into 4 distinct folders. I have a lot of active widgets that I presume create problems, because when I create folders I haven't had any more slowdowns on touch screen response.

I suppose that this bug it's depending from software overflow memory stacks, and I also suppose that is not so easy find and resolve the problem.

  • The least what Garmin should do is clarify if it's HW or SW issue.

If it's SW issue, it could be very well, like you mentioned, some memory leak and it should become P1 issue, since it's crippling UX completely. It should be fixed immediately in the next FW update.

If it's HW issue, then they should not just replace the faulty watches with new ones from the same HW revision and hope that for some reason the new piece will not have the issue (which is obviously not a case). In such case they should fix the HW and start replacing faulty watches with ones from the new batch (revision, I guess). Or if they decide to abandon 955 since 965 is already out, they should consider replacing with 965. Considering also the fact that 955 users have been acting for them as unpaid beta testers since June when 955 has been launched. Just imagine if e.g. some premium smartphone was released with so many issues and bugs, it would simply be not acceptable under any circumstances.

If Garmin wants to retain their customers in the future, it's the highest time to start acting. I have been using Garmin devices for years (both watches and cycling computers), also I've bought Garmin devices for family members and recommended them to my friends. And I believe that there were plenty of other users like me. If this doesn't get resolved in the permanent way (no, restarting the watch every day is not a solution), I will have to dramatically reconsider what will be my next watch or cycling computer.

  • I agree with everything you wrote The touch screen has been unusable since June and Garmin is doing nothing to fix the problem

  • So interesting , I've had my 955 (non solar) since launch and have had no issues with the touch at all.  I wonder why we all have such different experiences with the 955 and 255 , it seems like there is soemthing fundamentally wrong somewhere as there lacks consistency across users (allowing for user error etc).

I have touch enabled on activities as well as all time and it has been flawless. Not that that helps those who have issues, but just interesting the varied experiences.

  • Maybe it wouldn't be bad to think about whether it causes a slowdown in the number of Glances, or a specific Glance. Some user wrote that when he put some Glances in the folder, the problem went away.

  • I have been already wondering if this issue could be related to sleep tracking. So after I got warranty replacement I decided not to wear it to bed for few nights (anyway I have already lost all HRV data while waiting for replacement). Also I have removed all related widget glances - sleep, training readiness, HRV status... to no avail. After two days when I returned home from running the issue occurred once again.

    My current list of glances:
performance, training status, notifications, weather, heart rate, respiration, pulse ox (set to on-demand), cycling ability, steps, last activity, history, temperature, music controls.

  • Notifications, heart rate, hrv status, weather, sleep, solar intensity, calories, health snapshot, steeps, race calendar, temperature, stress, Training readiness, calendar, last activity, Training status, body battery, vo²max
