Garmin Forerunner 945 and Bicycling FTP calculation

Hello all,

When does the Garmin Forerunner 945 recalculate/update the Bicycling FTP when you do NOT have a FTP device?

Garmin Connect shows me 255 W at 20.02.2021 - but why on this day? There were lots of earlier bicycling tours and partially even longer ones, I started using it around one year earlier (February 2020).

What needs to be done to update the value again? I'm sometimes going with and without the chest strap although it doesn't really make sense for bicycling since it doesn't give you any further data compared to just wearing the watch.'

Due to weight loss and fitness programs, I'm no longer the person I've been one year ago, so I think my performance would be much better right now...

Thanks :)

  • I do bicycling sessions every couple of days and I don't think the update on that day was random. And 255 W is also realistic for that point of time. We just don't know the logic behind the calculation.

  • It is a data field in your profile that you can set (max 20min power avg) and in Device Settings under User Settings (Bike FTP and Ski FTP)... would you have possibly put it in as an estimate?

could just be autoinputted for some reason

  • I don't agree - the setting Bike FTP (VO₂max (Radfahren) in German) in the user settings is EMPTY in my case and this is not what it's presenting. A setting Ski FTP does not exist in the user settings.

Wherever it's getting the value from, it's not from the user settings. The value is empty and I've definitely never entered anything there since I have no known FTP value at all.

  • According to any documentation that I have seen the only way to receive a Bike or Ski FTP is by having a power meter.  So it must have been a system glitch , similar to how many or all people got an automatic Cross Country Ski FTP at some point when Power Zones were added to profiles/watches(?).   I don't understand how you don't have a Ski FTP, I have to scroll down a little and it is at the bottom to the right of Cycle Power Zones and they are both just above Critical Swim Speed for 100meters.

Unfortunately things like old FTP, Vo2max, Training Effect, TSS and other training metrics are not editable after they have been recorded.  You could possibly contact support and have them remove it if it is a big deal to you.  Otherwise you'll need to log some cycle activities with a power meter (spin bike or with a power meter on bike).

  • Yes, indeed I do not have a Ski (Langlauf) FTP in my user settings (neither in the Android App nor on the Garmin Connect Website). There's only the Bicycling FTP field which you can edit. No idea if this is different in other regions.

A person from Garmin Support already contacted me via email and informed me that they are investigating the issue. I mean it's not a big problem for me since my main activity is running and everything is pretty correct there but it's still interesting as I do bicycling too.
