training shows tempo for easy runs

My last few runs are all showing tempo or threshold for easy paced runs. So todays daily suggested run was a base run, at an easy pace for 40 minutes.  Following this my run was categorised as a Tempo run despite my heart rate remaining in Z1 or z2.  My zones are auto calculated against lactate threshold.  This seems the pattern of say the last 5 or 6 runs.

Any ideas why this is happening?

  • Try deleting your sport heart rate zones. I don’t know what your training routines are like, but do some HR max testing. Dr. Daniels method is easy and straightforward. Lastly, ensure your instrument is getting a good reading. Optical picks up a lot of noise and isn’t a reliable source where there is exaggerated movement.

The watch relies on good data to make an accurate estimate of pretty much anything. My VO2 max was overestimated 10% due to an artificially high max heart rate programmed into the 945. The predicted race times should be spot on if your HR max in your watch reflects what your heart can actually muster. If it appears overly optimistic, your max HR is set too high.

  • While I was annoyed at what I think was a software glitch, it did make me pay more attention to exactly what you're pointing to: whether or not I have the right max HR (although I'm also aware there's argument as to whether training by heart rate is a good idea). I will try Dr. Daniels' method, thanks for that suggestion. On Monday, I'm planning to do the trainer Road ramp test to get my FTP number so I can train for cycling based on my power zones (I suppose I should probably test my max cycling HR too since I know running and cycling HR zones usually differ and I know mine does, at least on the basis of the 'talk test.' Thanks for this.
